Quality pottery starts with the right foundation. I supply the same studio-tested stoneware, terracotta, and raw minerals I use in my own daily practice.

This is the foundation of my craft. I source a wide range of raw materials, from various clays like Red Terracotta and China Clay to essential minerals like Silica, Feldspar, and Grog. I believe having access to quality, tested materials is the first step in any potter's journey.

These are unfired test bars of different clay bodies I work with and supply. Each one is labeled to track its properties, like shrinkage and texture. Understanding your clay before you start is fundamental to the process.

The moment of truth. Holding a freshly fired glaze tile, with the warm kiln in the background. This tile shows a beautiful reaction between the glaze and the stoneware clay body, creating a unique, layered effect. This is the result of using quality ceramic materials.

About The Potter's Pantry: Clay Bodies & Raw Materials

Getting consistent clay in India can be a challenge. That is why I supply the same de-aired, pugged terracotta and high-fire stoneware I use in my own daily practice. You do not need to guess if your material will hold up, as it is already tested for shrinkage and plasticity before it reaches your wheel.

When I started pottery, finding materials was the hardest part. The old timers would tell me nothing was available, but I refused to accept that. I built this pantry so you do not have to struggle the way I did.

Why Materials Matter

Every piece you throw is defined by its base. If your clay is not properly processed, you will fight the material instead of working with it. I offer Red and Yellow Terracotta for those working on garden ware or traditional items, and a signature high-fire stoneware for anyone building durable tableware. Because I use these same bodies for my studio work, I know exactly how they behave at 1200°C.

Raw Materials & Glaze Chemistry

For those who prefer to mix their own glazes or experiment with clay recipes, I stock the essentials: China Clay, Feldspar, Bentonite, and Silica. These are not just generic supplies. These are ceramic-grade powders I have vetted. If you are learning the chemistry of glazes, I can explain how to adjust your flux and filler ratios to get the finish you want.

The Studio Difference

This is not a retail shop where things sit on a shelf gathering dust. It is a working studio in Byculla. Every bag of clay is pugged and de-aired to remove bubbles, which means you can sit at the wheel and start throwing immediately. No need to spend hours wedging. Whether you are a beginner looking for your first bag of clay or a professional needing consistent high-fire stoneware, this is a space where you can get what you need and ask questions about the process.
