Urban Master Planning & Campus Design
Phase 1: Research & Contextual Analysis
- Deep Site Investigation: Coordination of topographical studies and analysis of existing flora and fauna to preserve green cover.
- Historical & Social Mapping: Documentation of local heritage and surrounding urban fabric permeability.
- Inclusivity Audit: Planning for barrier-free movements like ramps and tactile paths ensuring accessibility for all capabilities.
Phase 2: Conceptual Master Plan
- Zoning & Massing Strategy: Definition of built vs unbuilt spaces with a focus on public congregation areas.
- Circulation Planning: Segregation of vehicular and pedestrian movement, prioritizing walkable pathways.
- Sustainability Framework: Placement of water bodies, passive cooling orientation, and adaptive reuse strategies for existing structures.
Phase 3: Visualization & Guidelines
- Conceptual Renders: High-fidelity 3D massing views showing scale, volume, and skyline relationships.
- Urban Design Guidelines: A rule-book for future development including material palettes (stone, brick, exposed concrete) and facade controls.
Full-Scope Architecture for Cultural Spaces
Conceptualization & Schematic Design
- Spatial Programming: Detailed layout planning for galleries, auditoriums, circulation cores, and public plazas.
- Structural Concept Integration: Collaboration with engineers to enable large column-free spans or unique structural expressions like steel exoskeletons.
Detailed Design & Materiality
- Bespoke Facade Engineering: Design of custom building skins such as expanded metal mesh or stone cladding to manipulate light.
- Interior Architecture: Design of fixed elements including statement staircases, reception desks, and joinery details.
- Material Palette Curation: Selection of tactile materials like exposed concrete, local granite, and mild steel.
Technical Documentation & Supervision
- GFC Drawings: Highly detailed drawings for civil, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC coordination.
- Specialist Coordination: Integration of museum-grade lighting, acoustics, and climate control systems.
- Artistic Oversight: Scheduled site visits to inspect critical junctures and approve material mock-ups.
About Public Architecture & Urban Design
What Drives My Public Architecture
I see public architecture as a kind of choreography - it’s not just building walls, it’s more like weaving together stories and spaces that belong to everyone. For me, it’s about responsibility to Bengaluru and its people, making places that feel rooted in memory and purpose. Sometimes it’s messy, often it’s a balancing act between art and the everyday.
How I Approach Urban Design
- I design for both crowds and quiet corners - a place for all, a place for some.
- Adaptive reuse of public spaces is big for me. I believe the most sustainable building is the one already standing, so I like working with what’s there and giving it new life.
- Socially responsible architecture is at the core. I want design to serve real needs, not just look pretty.
Projects in the City
Museum of Art & Photography (MAP) became more than a building - it’s a conversation with the city and its art. I do walkthroughs there, sharing the story behind the design.
Freedom Park and the National Martyrs Memorial are about urban memory and place-making. They’re spaces for reflection, gathering, and keeping heritage alive, without being stuck in the past.
Small Spaces, Big Impact
Not everything I do is grand. For the Anganwadi’s Wonder on Wheels, I converted a bus into a mobile classroom. It wasn’t easy, but design should help where it’s needed most.
Teaching and Learning
I spend time mentoring students in urban design studios, working with real city challenges - from busy bazaars to old canal areas. I see it as my responsibility to help shape how architecture serves the city, keeping the conversation going.

My Story
We’re Mathew and Ghosh Architects, based out of Bengaluru. Started with a simple house for Amma back in '95, that place grew into a patchwork of memories. Sketchbook’s always with me, whether I’m doodling Le Corbusier details or dreaming up a Museum of Lament. For us, design isn’t just buildings—it’s conversations, unrealised ideas, and stories that shape spaces. We’re about drawing, talking, and keeping it real with the community.
My Work
What we do - Architecture for homes, parks, memorials, offices, schools, hotels, conservation, exhibitions, interiors, furniture, and collaborative art installations.
Collaborative design process - We team up with artists and thinkers, blurring lines between disciplines for fresh, narrative-driven architecture.
Design with a story - Our projects—be it a sustainable memorial park or a home—carry context, memory, and sometimes a bit of socio political comment.
Process and exploration - From first sketch to built space, we push adaptive reuse design, material play, and inclusive environments.
