Safe Heart Openers: Backbend Workshops in Delhi
We believe backbends should feel like liberation, not strain. Using our signature prop-based method, we help you open your spine and chest safely, regardless of your current flexibility.
This "Backbends & Beyond" workshop shows how we guide students through various heart-opening postures. Notice the use of straps for support and my hands-on adjustments to ensure a safe and effective backbend.
For those new to deep backbends, this setup is perfect. A chair, bolsters, and blankets provide complete support for the spine, allowing the student to relax and open the chest without any strain.
Here you can see the instructor's hands guiding the student's shoulders, ensuring they remain open and relaxed in a supported wheel pose variation. This level of care is central to our teaching.
The props do the heavy lifting, so the student can focus on the sensation of opening the front body. This is a therapeutic approach to backbending that builds trust and flexibility.
Even with full support, the student is actively participating in the pose. This method builds body awareness, which is crucial for progressing to unsupported backbends later on.
Using a chair allows for a deep yet supported backbend from a standing position. This helps to open the upper back and shoulders, which are often tight.
This student demonstrates great strength and control, using the chair as a stable base to push up from his hands, fully engaging his back and shoulder muscles.
Combining a chair, wheel, and ropes, this advanced variation provides targeted support to different parts of the spine, allowing for a very deep and specific heart-opening stretch.
This image clearly shows how the yoga wheel fits into the curve of the spine, while the ropes and chair provide additional layers of support for a safe, intensive backbend.
The focus and determination on this student's face is inspiring. He is using the chair to work on dropping back, building the strength and confidence needed for the full expression of the pose.
About Heart Openers: Backbend Workshops
You will notice in our photos that we do not just ask you to bend back. We use chairs, wall ropes, and yoga wheels to create a scaffold for your spine. This is not about rushing into a deep posture. It is about giving your body the support it needs to let go of tension safely. By taking the weight off your joints and focusing on alignment, you learn to open your chest and strengthen your back muscles without the fear of strain.
Many people stay away from backbends because they associate them with sharp lower back pain. At our Azad Nagar studio, we do things differently. We treat the spine like a precious instrument. Before we go into deep postures like Urdhva Dhanurasana, we spend time preparing the supporting structures—the legs, the shoulders, and the core.
Why We Use Props
Props are not for people who cannot do the pose. Props are for everyone who wants to understand the pose better. Whether you are using a chair to support your lumbar spine or wall ropes to create traction for your vertebrae, these tools allow you to hold the pose longer without muscle fatigue. This extra time is where the real work happens. It allows your nervous system to relax into the stretch, which is the only way to genuinely increase flexibility.
What You Can Expect
Our workshops are intense but deeply supportive. We cap our batches to ensure every single person gets hands-on adjustments. If you are struggling with a specific transition or feeling fear, we are right there to spot you. The goal is to walk out feeling lighter and more open, not exhausted or sore.
We focus on the 'Heart Opener' aspect because backbends are often where we hold emotional stress. When you open your chest, you often find that you are also releasing a lot of mental weight. It is hard to explain until you feel it, but as we often say, 'Ab toh guru ji ne bhi boldia, YOG karma zaruri hai.' Come, experience it for yourself.
