Backbending and Hip Opening Workshops
We guide you through safe backbends and hip openers to build flexibility and strength. Using props and personal guidance, we make challenging poses accessible to every body, regardless of your starting point.
A student practices a headstand while another works on a supported backbend in the background, showing the diverse focus within a single class.
Using a chair for support is a fantastic way to build confidence and proper form in Chakrasana (Wheel Pose).
This student demonstrates a deep, chair-assisted backbend, opening the chest and shoulders while feeling fully supported.
A beautiful example of a full Wheel Pose, using a chair to maintain stability and deepen the spinal arch.
Finding length and space in a supported backbend during our regular class.
This student works on Eka Pada Chakrasana, or one-legged wheel pose, building incredible strength and balance.
We use props like this yoga strap to gently guide the body into the Mermaid Pose, making the deep stretch more attainable.
Working towards Hanumanasana (the splits) with the support of bolsters to ease into the stretch and protect the hamstrings.
A student smiles as she progresses in her split practice, showing the joy found in the journey.
This video captures the journey into a full backbend, starting with a resistance band for support and ending in a graceful, strong Wheel Pose.
About Backbending & Hip Opening
You don't need to be flexible to start backbending. We use Iyengar-style chairs, straps, and bolsters to support your spine and hips so you feel safe rather than strained. This means you can find the correct alignment for poses like Chakrasana or Eka Pada Rajakapotasana without worrying about injury, letting your body open up at its own pace.
Why We Focus on Props
Many people avoid backbends because they feel unsafe or experience pain. In our workshops at The Yoga Tribe Studio in Andheri West, we break that cycle by using props. A chair supports your weight in Wheel Pose (Chakrasana), allowing you to find the lift in your chest without crushing your lower back. Straps help you reach your feet in Mermaid Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana) so your shoulders stay squared and stable. It is not about the final pose, but the safety and alignment you find along the way.
What to Expect
Our sessions are designed to release the tension stored in the hips and spine—areas where most of us carry the stress of city life. We don't just jump into deep stretches. We begin with preparatory asanas to warm up the muscles and lubricate the joints. Whether you are working toward Hanumanasana (the splits) or simply trying to reverse the stiffness from sitting at a desk all day, these workshops provide a structured environment to build strength and mobility.
Who Is This For?
These sessions are for anyone, from absolute beginners to intermediate practitioners. If you have been practicing for years but feel stuck in your progress, our teachers offer hands-on spotting and manual adjustments to help you move past physical blocks. We keep our batches small to ensure that every student gets the attention they need to practice safely and effectively.
