My Architectural Philosophy and Creative Journey

Architecture is not merely building. It is a dialogue between space, nature, and the people who inhabit it. Here is how I explore that connection through design and mentorship.

This film provides a brief overview of my architectural journey, from my education at CEPT Ahmedabad and ETH Zurich to the founding of my studio. It highlights my key mentors and my philosophy of designing living ecosystems that are open, connected, and crafted with care.

The Ashadeep school in rural Varanasi, lit for a celebration. The accompanying quote, "Education is kindling of the flame and not filling of the vessel," is the guiding principle of my mentoring. I aim to inspire, not just instruct.

A session with students at Shabnam's House, a project very close to my heart. This artist's residence, inspired by Sufi folk traditions, is an example of how architecture can be a labor of love and patience, creating a sacred space that lives seamlessly with nature.

A heartwarming revisit to the artist's residence with the client, Shabnam Virmani, and a group for a reflective exercise. Seeing a space continue to inspire and host meaningful gatherings long after completion is immensely rewarding.

My core design philosophy, "Form Follows Life," is a reminder that architecture must serve the essence of life itself. When we obsess over form, we tend to miss the whole point; the starting point must always be a deeper understanding of the context.14
A quote that captures my belief that we must move away from an obsession with form and return to the essence, which is life. Before any issue of form can emerge, there must be a certain amount of reasoning and a deeper understanding of the project's purpose.

This building demonstrates my core belief that architecture should set the stage for the landscape to perform. Here, the clean lines of the structure provide a framework for lush greenery to flourish, creating a seamless transition between the built and natural worlds.7
For the historic Bangalore Club, I designed this L-shaped colonnade to enhance the main lawn without overpowering the 100-year-old heritage buildings. The design provides elegant, sheltered seating while preserving the site's character, using traditional tiles and local Sadharhalli stone.
This rendering for a community living project in Mysuru illustrates my vision for integrating social spaces with nature. The sunken amphitheater and surrounding greenery are designed to be the heart of the community, encouraging interaction and connection among residents.
The entrance to the Cummins Gallery in North Bangalore showcases my approach to minimalist geometry and natural light. The simple forms and earthy tones create an immersive setting, where the architecture itself becomes a piece of art, playing with the shadows of nearby trees.

This archival site plan for the Fort Aguada Beach Resort in Goa from 1973 shows my early commitment to context-responsive design. The goal was not for the building to disappear, but for it to continue the logic of the natural terrain.
