Modular Furniture Design for Adaptive Public Spaces
Beyond building structures, we explore design at a human scale. This collection features our product experiments, starting with LOKI—a modular seating system that adapts to your environment, not the other way around.
This is LOKI, a modular bench system I designed. Composed of several distinct modules, it can be configured in endless ways to adapt to the needs of any interior space, from a school to a public lobby.
The LOKI bench is designed for playful flexibility. This image shows a simple configuration, but its modules allow for curves, corners, and straight runs, making it a versatile public seating solution.
About Additional Work
The LOKI bench is engineered with five distinct modules—straight, curved, corner, end, and connector pieces. Because these units lock together easily, you can reconfigure your seating arrangement as your space evolves, whether you need a serpentine layout for a lobby or a compact circular cluster for a library reading nook.
Why Modular Seating Matters
In our architectural practice, we often talk about 'in-between spaces'—those lobby areas, transit zones, and hallways where people pause. We found that most off-the-shelf furniture is too rigid to activate these spots effectively. LOKI was born from the need for a system that doesn't just sit in a room but helps define how people move through it.
Design Flexibility
Instead of ordering fixed-size benches that might not fit your specific floor plate, LOKI allows you to dictate the flow.
- Adaptability: Use the curved module to break the monotony of a long, harsh corridor or create intimacy in a large waiting area.
- Material Honesty: We prioritize durability for high-traffic environments like schools and public offices, ensuring the pieces feel grounded and substantial rather than flimsy.
- Spatial Storytelling: Each configuration tells a different story. A straight run provides efficient transit seating, while a corner-heavy layout invites conversation and social gathering.
Whether you are an architect looking for a versatile piece to finish a foyer or a school administrator needing flexible furniture for a collaborative zone, this system provides a high degree of agency. We focus on the geometry of the modules so you can focus on the geometry of your floor plan.
M9 Design Studio
At M9 Design Studio, we don't just design buildings; we obsess over the details that make a room function. LOKI came out of a simple need for furniture that plays nice with others, shifting shapes to fill awkward corners or open up long corridors.
