Urban design is an act of care. We transform forgotten or chaotic spaces into living canvases where nature and community can thrive together.

A close-up of the "Echoes of the Deep" light installation in Amsterdam. The glowing lines form an abstract representation of an Indian step-well, creating a piece of architecture made purely of light that interacts with its reflection in the canal water.

A key feature of my proposal for Kharkiv’s Freedom Square is this sculptural water bridge. It serves as both a playful public art piece and a functional pedestrian crossing, embodying the project's goal of integrating art, nature, and community activity.

These diagrams show the strategic layering of the Kharkiv Freedom Square design. I broke down the site into zones for landscape, circulation, and built structures, ensuring a clear and organized plan that prioritizes pedestrian flow and green space.

This render depicts a quiet corner of the proposed park in Kharkiv, with a large water body surrounded by naturalistic plantings. My aim was to create a biodiverse environment where city dwellers could reconnect with nature.

These conceptual sketches for Kharkiv's Freedom Square illustrate the design process. They show how I analyzed site context, pedestrian flows, and surrounding communities to create a zoning plan that serves daily commuters, students, and tourists alike.

An elevated view of the Kharkiv Freedom Square proposal, showing how the design creates multiple levels for different activities. A wide plaza with a water feature sits at a lower level, while an elevated park and bridge offer green pathways through the city.

This light installation in Amsterdam projects fairy tale phrases onto the canal walls. The piece, titled "Once Upon a Time," plays with the idea of storytelling and invites passersby on boats to reflect on their own narratives.

About Reimagining Public Spaces

When we approach masterplanning, we prioritize the 'in-between' spaces—the lobbies, pathways, and courtyards that often go ignored. We use sun-path analysis and flow logic to ensure every square foot serves a dual purpose: efficient movement and comfortable rest. Instead of imposing a rigid structure, we focus on balancing hardscapes with landscape elements so the built environment feels like a natural extension of its context, allowing it to adapt as the community grows.

Great urban design does not shout. It listens to the land, the sun, and the people who walk through it. Whether we are tackling large-scale masterplans like our award-winning proposal for Kharkiv’s Freedom Square or designing intimate public art like the 'Echoes of the Deep' installation in Amsterdam, our process remains rooted in the same principles of connectivity and reflection.

The Art of the Masterplan

For us, a masterplan is never just a blueprint. It is a strategic framework for how life happens. When we work on community-oriented campuses or city squares, we focus on:

  • Passive Systems: Integrating topography analysis and bio-swales for natural cooling and water management.
  • Circulation Logic: Designing slow-mobility pathways that prioritize pedestrians and cyclists over vehicle traffic.
  • Zoning for Connection: Separating public, semi-public, and private areas while ensuring they all bleed into each other through shared green corridors.

Designing for Pause

In our work on projects like the Dr. Vishnuvardhan Memorial or various high-density plazas, we create spaces for pause. This might be a water court that reflects the sky, an amphitheater designed for local dance practice, or a street-level installation that uses light to turn a busy canal into a moment of quiet reflection. We believe that by integrating nature into the urban fabric—using materials like brick, lime plaster, and Kota stone—we create environments that feel 'lived-in' from day one.

Our Process

Our design philosophy is collaborative and research-heavy. We start by mapping existing site context, pedestrian flows, and community needs. From there, we develop:

  • Conceptual Zoning: Establishing building heights and density that respect the skyline.
  • Urban Guidelines: Creating rulebooks for fenestration, shading, and sustainable lighting to ensure the space maintains its character over time.
  • Visual Narrative: Using mood perspectives and 3D models to help stakeholders see how the space will evolve over the years.

Whether it is a public square or a corporate vertical campus, our goal is to design a backdrop for the stories people write in these spaces every day.

At M9 Design Studio, we treat every masterplan as a story waiting to be told. We are not just building structures; we are creating living canvases where nature and community intersect. We look for those quiet spots where people can pause, connect, and let the space breathe.
