Featured Projects in Urban and Public Space Design
From community plazas to tactical road safety interventions, these projects reflect our journey of reclaiming public space through thoughtful, people-centric design.
This is the Basera Community Plaza in Ahmedabad, a space we designed for a women-led organization. It shows how simple, local materials like bamboo can be used to create a versatile and warm haven for community gatherings, learning, and empowerment.
At Nepean Greens in Mumbai, we transformed a neglected staircase and garden into a lush, multi-level public plaza. This view captures the dynamic interplay of steps, platforms, and greenery, creating a tranquil escape and a vital pedestrian link within the dense urban fabric.
The Urban Twist sculpture at a busy Ahmedabad crossroads, seen here at dusk. This project showcases our approach to modern placemaking, using traditional brick in a dynamic spiral form to create a contemporary landmark that calms traffic and invites contemplation.
A before-and-after view of the Basera Community Plaza site. This transformation from a barren parking lot into a vibrant hub demonstrates our core mission: to find potential in forgotten urban spaces and reclaim them for community life.
The revitalized VDP Garden in Mumbai, where local residents now gather and relax. By opening up the park to the street and adding vibrant, playful elements, we turned a once-avoided area into a safe and welcoming space for all ages.
Visitors enjoying the serene valley view from the Sargakhet Handicraft Centre in Uttarakhand. This adaptive reuse project revived a British-era structure, turning it into a space that supports local artisans and offers a moment of quiet reflection for travelers.
This is a glimpse into our master planning process for the Ensaara township in Bengaluru. The animated diagram shows how we layer elements like connectivity, green loops, and activity zones to design a cohesive and vibrant open-space network for an entire community.
A design visualization for the 'Nature in Pockets' community in Indore. This render illustrates our vision for creating active and engaging public spaces, featuring an amphitheater and interactive water jets designed to bring families and children together.
Our tactical urbanism intervention at the Attibele Intersection in Bengaluru. Using low-cost, high-impact design solutions like colorful paint and bollards, we created safer school zones and pedestrian crossings, demonstrating how small changes can make a big difference in road safety.
About Featured
We do not believe in quick-fix facades. Whether it is a junction redesign in Bengaluru or a community plaza in Ahmedabad, our process begins with on-ground observation. We spend time with the people who actually use the space to ensure our interventions solve real-world problems like pedestrian safety, neighborhood connectivity, and accessibility, rather than just adding aesthetic value.
Architecture is, at its core, a conversation between heritage and the future. Our practice, Compartment S4, views every project as a narrative waiting to be told. We operate as a collective, sketching, rearranging, and obsessing over textures, because we believe that the best spaces emerge from tough conversations and rigorous site analysis.
Our Design Philosophy
We prioritize adaptive reuse and context-sensitive design. By working with the existing fabric of a city—whether it is a British-era structure in Uttarakhand or a neglected intersection in Mumbai—we aim to preserve history while repurposing it for modern communal needs. Our approach to tactical urbanism is data-driven; we map crash data and pedestrian flow to redesign dangerous junctions into safe, accessible public realms.
Notable Interventions
- Nepean Greens, Mumbai: We transformed an abandoned garden into a multi-level plaza by cladding steps in black granite and incorporating locally sourced stone to create a sense of place.
- Basera, Ahmedabad: A community plaza built for a women-led organization, using bamboo and lightweight roofing to allow the space to shift and change based on daily community activities.
- Sargakhet Handicraft Centre: An adaptive reuse project where we revitalized a dilapidated post office, turning it into a vibrant hub for local artisans that encourages sustainable tourism.
We believe that design should feel earthy and calm. Our studio is not just about the final render; it is about creating visual and emotional anchors where daily life meets thoughtful, structural care. If you are looking to revitalize an urban pocket, plan a campus landscape, or improve street safety, we invite you to start a conversation about how we can shape the space together.
