Practical Online Yoga Teaching Strategies

Teaching yoga through a screen is a different beast than an in-person studio. After 5,000+ online classes, I have developed a way to make virtual teaching feel personal and precise. Here is how you can build a real practice and connect with your students.

Here are some of my go-to strategies for effective online yoga instruction. I explain how to use "outside in" vs "inside out" cueing, give simple visual cues your students will actually understand, and demonstrate both right and wrong alignments to improve their practice.

About Practical Online Teaching Tips

If you are struggling with student engagement, stop guessing. Use 'outside-in' or 'inside-out' cueing to guide them linearly, and use visual analogies like 'headlights at your pelvis' instead of vague terms. When you give them a clear, mental image, they connect to their bodies faster, and your confidence in front of the screen will skyrocket.

Teaching through a screen is a unique skill. You do not have the luxury of walking around the room to correct postures, so your verbal cues need to be bulletproof. I break down my approach into three areas: technical, verbal, and student management.

Technical Setup

Stop relying solely on your laptop webcam. Position your phone or camera to capture your entire body while still being close enough to demo specific alignments. Use the 'spotlight' feature on Zoom. It puts you center stage so students aren't squinting at a grid of faces.

Cueing Logic

Whether you use 'outside-in' (limbs to core) or 'inside-out' (core to limbs), stick to one direction. It reduces confusion. If they are doing a pose wrong, show them the 'wrong' version first, then correct it. It is a great way to help them spot their own mistakes without you having to touch them.

The Business of Teaching

It is not just about the asanas. You need to manage DMs, filter time-wasters, and set boundaries from day one. In my masterclass, we go over the boring but necessary stuff: pricing, camera angles, and how to stay sane while growing your community. Let's skip the trial and error and get straight to building your career.
