Advanced Yoga Practice & Inversions: Build Strength and Control
Inversions are about building trust in your own strength, not just getting upside down. Whether you are working toward your first headstand or refining forearm stands, I am here to guide you through the process safely and methodically.
I am so inspired by my student's dedication. Here he is challenging himself with inversions, showing how consistency is the key to progress in your yoga journey.
Another shot of my dedicated student in Salamba Sarvangasana, or supported shoulder stand. His commitment to the practice is an inspiration to everyone in the class.
My student gives us all the Friday motivation we need. Here he is flowing from crow pose into a headstand, showing incredible strength and control. No excuses.
This evening I tried some variations in Pincha Mayurasana, or forearm stand, using the wall for support. It is a great way to build strength and explore different leg positions in the pose.
Exploring a one-legged crane pose forearm balance with the help of a block. This advanced variation requires a great deal of strength, balance, and focus.
Here are three of my favorite ways to go up into a tripod headstand. Each entry, whether from crow, pike, or straddle, requires a different kind of core control and strength.
I love inversions and always try to include them in my flow. The feeling of being upside down is unparalleled, and it is a great way to build strength and change your perspective.
The joy of self-practice. Here I am working on my headstand, with my cat as a curious observer. Finding moments for my own practice is essential.
Taking baby steps in my forearm stand practice. Using the wall helps me build the strength and confidence to eventually hold the pose in the center of the room.
Using a yoga wheel to help with my forearm stand practice. Props can be incredibly helpful for working on advanced poses safely.
About Advanced Practice & Inversions
Advanced practice is often misrepresented as simply being able to hold a complex pose, but it is really about the drills that get you there. In my sessions, we focus on the mechanics of weight distribution and core engagement, using props like wheels, blocks, and walls to build the muscle memory required for inversions. We move at your pace, breaking down every transition so you understand how to move safely before trying to balance on your hands or forearms.
Building Your Inversion Practice
Many students approach advanced asanas with hesitation, wondering if they are 'strong enough.' My approach to inversion and advanced practice is based on step-by-step progression. We don't just jump into poses; we prepare the body through:
- Foundational Drills: Before we hold a Pincha Mayurasana (forearm stand), we spend time building shoulder stability and core strength using the wall as your primary support.
- Prop-Assisted Learning: We use yoga wheels to open the thoracic spine and blocks to understand alignment in poses like Ashtavakrasana (eight-angle pose), making them accessible even if you are just starting your advanced journey.
- Safe Transitions: Whether we are moving from Bakasana (crow pose) into a tripod headstand, or working on forearm balances, I provide the verbal cues and physical adjustments needed to ensure your alignment is correct, preventing injury and building your confidence.
Why Practice With Me?
- Small Batch Focus: My studio sessions in Santacruz West are kept intimate, allowing me to watch your form closely and provide real-time corrections.
- Holistic Integration: Advanced practice isn't just physical. We pair these demanding poses with breathwork and mindfulness, helping you manage the adrenaline of being upside down.
- Safety First: We avoid 'force' and ego-driven practice. If a pose doesn't feel right, we find a modification that works for your body today. Remember, yoga is about showing up consistently, not performing perfectly.
Whether you are practicing at our studio or joining my live online sessions, my goal is to help you build a relationship with your practice that feels strong, balanced, and sustainable.
