The Janbo: Finding Calm in Clay
More than just a pottery studio, this is a space for slow living, quiet reflection, and the tactile joy of shaping life with your own hands.
This is where it all begins. The quiet hum of the wheel, a simple lump of clay, and the potential for something beautiful. Watch as we guide the earth with our hands, pulling the walls up into a form that feels both new and ancient. This is the core of our practice, a moving meditation that we share in our intensive courses.
Our three month Professional Pottery Program is designed for those who are ready to move beyond a hobby and build a career. This intensive course is a deep dive into the craft, covering everything from mastering the wheel to understanding the business of being a potter. We keep our classes small to ensure you get the guidance you need.
Welcome to our home. We built this studio to be a sanctuary from the noise of the city. It's a warm, light filled space with corners to relax, connect with other artists, and find your focus. Come in, have a cup of tea, and feel the calm settle in.
Learning pottery is a conversation between you, the clay, and your guide. Here, I'm working with a student, feeling the clay together, and guiding her hands to understand the pressure and movement. This one on one attention is central to how we teach, ensuring you build skill and confidence.
A day at The Janbo is filled with quiet moments of focus, shared laughter, and the gentle rhythm of creation. From morning guided sessions to open afternoons for practice, our studio is alive with a community of makers, each on their own creative path. This is the supportive environment where you can truly grow.
This is the result of patience, practice, and passion. A student's finished vase, glazed and fired, held up against the backdrop of the studio where it was made. Every piece that leaves our kiln tells a story of growth and the joy of creating something beautiful and functional with your own hands.
The Janbo began not with clay, but with silence. After burning out, I paused everything. It was in that quiet space, with just my dog Pinto for company, that I found the path back to myself. This story is the foundation of our studio, a place built for healing and rediscovery through art.
About this collection
When you walk into our studio on Sarjapur Road, you will notice the shift in pace immediately. Whether you are here for a weekend workshop or our three month professional program, we focus on the rhythm of your hands, the quality of the clay, and the headspace it clears. It is not about rushing to a finished product, but about the practice itself, allowing you to learn the subtle balance of pressure and release that gives every piece its character.
The Janbo was born from a period of silence. Our founder, Madhumita, hit pause on a fast-paced life, and in that stillness, clay became the medium for rediscovery. We built this studio on the belief that creation is a form of therapy.
Our Philosophy
We believe in slow crafting. In our space, you will not find the pressure of mass production. Instead, we offer a sanctuary where you can disconnect from the city and reconnect with a raw, tactile process. Our studio is designed for focus, with dedicated stations for wheel throwing, hand building, and glazing.
The Path Forward
We cater to everyone from curious beginners to serious practitioners:
- Beginner Workshops: If you just want to experience the mud, our sessions are perfect for testing the waters.
- Professional Pottery Program: For those who want to build a career, our 12-week intensive course covers the full spectrum, from clay chemistry and kiln loading to building a sustainable creative business. We keep our batches small to ensure 1-on-1 mentorship.
- Residency & Retreats: For outstation students or those wanting full immersion, we offer residential packages near the studio in Kodathi, allowing you to live the process.
Why Practice With Us
Beyond the technical skills, you join a community. We host artists from all over and encourage our students to find their own artistic voice rather than copying ours. We provide unlimited stoneware clay for practice, professional tool kits, and guidance through every step, including the firing process in our studio kiln. Come, get your hands dirty, and see what the clay has to tell you.
The Janbo
We built this space for people who, like us, needed to slow down and find their ground. Whether you are just curious about the wheel or ready to turn pottery into a career, we are here to guide you through the process, messy hands and all.
