Move beyond the wheel and explore the limitless possibilities of hand-building. Learn to shape organic forms and complex structures using only your hands and foundational clay techniques.

The making of a mother and child sculpture. This piece was built using a coil and carve technique, where the form is slowly built up and then intricate details are carved away to create the swirling, interconnected shapes.

A student works on a complex, perforated lamp. This hand building project involves carefully carving out organic shapes from a thrown form, playing with light and shadow. It's a testament to patience and artistic vision.

Our instructor, Vidya, sculpting a cat from memory. This video captures the process of adding and shaping clay to form the animal's features, a beautiful example of bringing a character to life in three dimensions.

A finished bust by self taught artist Sudipto, who uses our kiln firing services. This piece showcases incredible detail and emotion, proving that passion and dedication are the most important tools for an artist.

A collection of sculptural works by artist Sudipto, all fired in our studio kiln. His work is expressive and imaginative, ranging from abstract forms to detailed busts. We are proud to support local artists on their journey.

About this collection

Hand-building forces you to slow down. Unlike wheel throwing, which relies on centrifugal force and speed, techniques like coiling, slab building, and pinching require you to physically construct the form, layer by layer. It is a methodical, tactile process that allows for complex, organic shapes that you simply cannot create on a wheel. Whether you are aiming for precise, geometric vessels or fluid, sculptural busts, this approach gives you complete control over every curve and texture.

Beyond the Wheel: The Art of Hand-Building

While the spinning wheel often gets the spotlight, hand-building is where true sculptural freedom lives. At The Janbo, I emphasize techniques that connect you deeply to the medium:

  • Coil Building: A patient, meditative process where you build walls from ropes of clay, perfect for large, expressive forms.
  • Slab Construction: Ideal for geometric, structural pieces like lamps, planters, or unique teapots, offering sharp lines and deliberate surfaces.
  • Pinching: The most intimate method, allowing you to shape small bowls and figures directly with your fingertips.

Why Choose Hand-Building?

It is approachable for beginners but offers infinite complexity for experienced artists. You do not need expensive equipment to start, just your hands and a bit of patience. It is also incredibly forgiving; mistakes in hand-building can be carved, smoothed, or incorporated into the design, unlike the wheel where a collapse can ruin a piece.

Creating at The Janbo

Our studio in Kodathi, Sarjapur Road, is designed for this kind of focus. Whether you are joining our 12-week professional course or dropping in for a workshop, you will learn to manage clay consistency, structural integrity, and firing processes.

We are also a resource for independent artists in Bengaluru. If you have finished your own sculptural work at home and are looking for a reliable kiln firing service, I handle bisque and glaze firings to ensure your pieces survive the transition from raw clay to finished ceramic.

I started The Janbo because clay felt like a way to hit pause in a loud world. My goal is to teach you the technical skills of sculpture and hand-building, but mostly, I want to help you find that same sense of quiet focus in your own hands.
