Pottery Classes in Mumbai: Master the Wheel
Whether you are holding clay for the first time or looking to refine your technique, our studio is a space to learn, practice, and connect. Let's find your rhythm together.
Our courses are designed to guide you on your personal clay journey. From basic wheel throwing to advanced mentorship modules, we have a path that is suitable for you, whether you can join on weekdays or weekends.
Mastering the wheel starts with mastering the basics. This video shows the process of coning the clay up and down to center it, a crucial first step that requires a strong grip and a steady hand. Practice is everything!
Creating closed forms like a 'matka' requires a different approach. Here, I demonstrate how to shape the rim early on and then gently expand the form from the inside. The clay will wobble, but the key is to stay calm and contain it.
It's a joy to see students progress. This advanced student, who started during the pandemic, is now confidently throwing beautiful forms. Our one-on-one guided sessions are designed to help you refine your skills and walk this path together.
A typical day in the studio with our basic and advanced students. You can see some students wedging clay by hand while others are focused on the wheel, each person lost in their own creative moment.
The path to a perfect form involves a lot of trial and error. Sometimes, you have to break a piece down to understand what went wrong. This is a vital part of the learning process for every potter.

Sculpture begins with a strong foundation. Our courses introduce the fundamentals of structure in 3D, using both hand-building techniques and the potter's wheel to explore form.
About The Potter's Wheel Journey
When you first sit at the wheel, your clay will wobble, and that happens to everyone. The secret isn't fighting the clay with force, but learning to center your breath and body along with it. We focus on this process over perfection approach in our sessions, guiding you from that first chaotic lump to a form you can hold in your hands.
Your Clay Journey at Studio Karva
Learning pottery is as much about patience as it is about technique. At Studio Karva, we believe the wheel is a teacher. Whether you join us for a foundation course or an advanced mentorship, my goal is to help you move from simply making a shape to understanding the clay's language.
The Learning Process
We do not believe in rushing. Our sessions, whether they are our one-day introductions or the 8-session basic wheel modules, are designed to give you enough time to experience every stage. You will learn to prepare your clay through wedging, understand the importance of centering, and finally, the delicate art of pulling walls to create your own bowls, cylinders, or closed forms.
Why Small Batches Matter
Being based in Govandi East, we serve students from all over Mumbai who are looking for more than just a quick class. We keep our batch sizes small because pottery requires guidance. You need someone to see exactly where your grip is slipping or where your pressure is uneven. I am often right there, helping you adjust your stance or showing you how to fix a rim that has started to wobble.
A Space for Growth
Beyond the technical skills, this is a community hub. You will see students prepping clay by hand, others refining their glazing techniques, and sometimes, a bit of laughter and chaos. It is a place to connect with fellow makers.
- Foundations: Perfect for those starting from scratch.
- Advanced Mentorship: For those who want to refine specific forms like matkas or complex sculptures.
Bahot shukriya for considering our studio. Let's get our hands dirty and see what we can create together. Jai Ma!
