Transform simple clay into expressive art. From anatomical studies to large-scale hand-built sculptures, join us to shape your vision in a space built for connection.

A detail from one of my recent sculptures, showing the serene expression of the face. I share my experience with sculpting faces in our Face Anatomy workshops, which are open to both beginners and intermediate students.

This hand-built, high-fired sculpture is titled 'Moment of Surrender'. The play of light and shadow brings out the form and emotion of the piece. This is the kind of deep, personal work we explore in our sculpture sessions.

The making of a Ganapati idol for a student, from a simple coiled form to the final decorated murti in her home. The entire process was a prayer, created while listening to soulful Manipuri folk music.

This anatomical heart sculpture was created using the coiling technique, built hollow from the ground up. It's a great example of how basic hand-building methods can be used to create complex and evocative forms.

Learning to sculpt a face starts with understanding the basic structure. This simple sketch, done during an anatomy class, shows the foundational grid we use to place the features. Practice begins with observation.

My mother's spontaneous creation of a small temple during a session at the studio. It’s a beautiful reminder that creativity can be a form of devotion, and that inspiration can come from anywhere.

My mother, deeply focused as she carves details into the clay temple she is building. It is wonderful to see how everyone, regardless of age, finds their own connection with the clay.

The small, hand-built temple taking shape on the worktable. You can see the texture of the coils and the marks of the tools, a testament to the hands-on process of its creation.

The finished pieces. My mother's spontaneously created temple and a small doll made by my father. It's a joy to have my family create alongside me in the studio.

Coiling is a meditative and versatile hand-building technique. Here, you can see me adding coils to build up the walls of a large pot, slowly and patiently creating the form.

About Sculpting Stories in Clay

When we talk about sculpture at the studio, we aren't chasing textbook perfection. Whether you’re learning to map a human face using a structural grid or coiling a large form by hand, the goal is to observe the clay and let it hold your expression. It takes patience to build hollow, but we’ll teach you the balance of wall thickness so your pieces stay strong throughout the drying and firing stages.

Building form, piece by piece

Sculpture is about observation. In our anatomy and hand-building masterclasses at the Govandi studio, we strip away the intimidation factor. If you've ever wanted to recreate a human face or build a complex structure, it starts with understanding the basic grid. We guide you through the process of building hollow—a technique essential for larger pieces like my anatomical hearts or coiled temple structures. It is a meditative, slow practice that requires you to listen to what the clay needs.

Why hand-building matters

While the potter's wheel is wonderful, hand-building offers a different kind of freedom. You aren't limited by the rotation of the wheel. You can explore asymmetry, texture, and organic shapes that tell a story. In our workshops, I share the coiling techniques I use for my own work—Sachin, who has been with us for five years, uses these same methods to build large, expressive vessels. We take the time to refine these techniques, helping you understand how to score, slip, and join clay so that your work is structurally sound.

The spirit of the studio

Everything at Studio Karva is connected. The clay you handle, the focus you find, and the laughter in the room are all part of the same process. Whether you are building a Ganapati idol or a simple bowl, the effort is an act of devotion. My mentors taught me that art is not just about the final object, but the moments of struggle and breakthrough in between. Bahot shukriya for being part of this journey. Jai Ma!
