About From Earth to Art: The Firing & Glazing Process
The kiln opening is always the moment of truth. You might spend weeks prepping a piece, but the fire has the final say. Whether we are using our gas kiln for reduction effects or the electric one for precise temperatures, it is rarely about perfection—it is about the surprise that emerges when you finally crack open that door and see your work transformed.
Pottery is a dialogue between the maker and the elements. At Studio Karva, the firing process is where we listen to what the clay has to say. We guide students through the entire lifecycle of a piece, from the initial 'bisque firing'—which hardens the clay and prepares it for glaze absorption—to the final glaze firing.
Learning to glaze is like learning to paint with anticipation. You have to understand how different oxides and minerals react to heat. In our glazing classes, we teach you how to apply slips and glazes so your pieces don't just look good, but feel right in your hands. We cover both gas kiln firing, which can create beautiful, unpredictable variations in color through reduction, and electric kiln firing, which offers stability for those refining their technique.
For many, the most rewarding part is the kiln opening event. It is a shared experience of anxiety and joy. Seeing the final results together—discussing why a glaze ran or how the heat changed a surface—is a huge part of how we learn as a community. Whether you are curious about the technicalities of kiln management or just want to see how to make your mugs and bowls pop with color, there is always a seat at our table. Bahot shukriya for trusting us with your clay journey.
