Architecture with Soul: Our Design Philosophy
We don’t chase styles. We listen to the site, the light, and the wind. This is how we find the atmosphere and soul in every space we build.
A collection of watercolor sketches of our projects. These illustrations capture the atmosphere and feeling we strive for in our work, blending architecture with the verdant Indian landscape.
A video showing our "There is no Planet B" pavilion at the ADFF+STIR festival. Built from jute and bamboo, it is an ancient space expressed in temporary materials, an ode to our planet.
A video of our Dubai Hills villa at night. We feel a sinking, bittersweet feeling when handing over a project, as a chapter of our lives comes to an end.
Rain in the tropics. A short film capturing the mood and atmosphere of a monsoon shower on a pool. It is a lyric of a poet, a moment to breathe.
A rendering of a pool for a new family retreat. The design creates a paradise of green, water, and stone for relaxation and natural living.
The making of our "There is no Planet B" installation. We see art in the putting up and pulling down of temporary pandals on our streets, a reflection of Mumbai's undying spirit.
The simple, clean roofline of Villa 15 in Alibaug. Our experiments with country homes focus on low-maintenance Indian materials and fine craft to create backdrops for a beautiful life.
Project after project, we keep it human. A peculiar quality of "simple." Like a reggae song, our team is our band, and this is our journey.
A rendering of our pavilion for the ADFF festival in Mumbai. The design connects an ancient Chaitya space with a Bodhi tree, using the humble materials of bamboo and jute.
About Our Ethos: Philosophy in Practice
Architecture for us begins with listening. Before we draw a line, we map the sun, the wind, and the natural drainage of your land. Whether it is a coastal villa in Alibaug or a high-rise retrofit in Mumbai, our approach remains the same. We prefer one-room-thick layouts that breathe naturally, reducing your dependence on air conditioning and creating a living space that feels deeply connected to the world outside.
The Process: A Conversation with the Land
We do not believe in forcing buildings onto a site. Our work is a quiet chat with the soil and the climate. By prioritizing passive cooling techniques like high ceilings, internal courtyards, and vertical airflow channels, we create homes that work with the environment rather than against it.
Why We Choose Honest Materials
We avoid synthetic shortcuts. Our palette consists of materials that age with grace and dignity. You will find us working with:
- Rammed Earth: For thermal mass and natural texture.
- Salvaged Teak: To bring warmth and history into your living spaces.
- Natural Stone: Including Khadappa and basalt for flooring and structural elements that stand the test of time.
Beyond the Blueprints
Our studio operates like a band tuning up. We value physical models, hand-drawn sketches, and on-site collaboration with masons. This hands-on method allows us to capture the specific atmosphere of a place. From urban apartment retrofits in Mumbai to multi-generational family retreats, our goal is to build stories. We build for the people who inhabit these spaces, ensuring that every corner offers a sense of well-being and quietude.
Climate-Responsive Design
India has a diverse climate, and we adapt our strategy to each location. We design for the heat, using brick jaalis and sliding timber screens to filter light, creating dappled shade effects that turn a simple room into a sanctuary. If you are looking for architecture that prioritizes nature, air, and light over trends, we are ready to listen.
Spasm Design
We operate like a band tuning up, not a corporate firm. We build to capture dreams rather than follow trends, preferring raw materials like rammed earth and salvaged teak to create spaces that breathe.
