Mentorship and Artistic Community

The journey of an artist is never solitary. It is defined by the gurus who guided me, the students I mentor, and the theatre community in Bangalore that shapes my creative identity.

A student seeking blessings in the traditional Guru Shishya parampara. This bond between a teacher and student is sacred and something I deeply cherish.

Being interviewed on DD Chandana's 'Shubhodaya' morning show. It was a wonderful feeling to be featured on Doordarshan, a channel that is an emotion for many of us.

A poignant moment as Rudraiya, the caretaker of HN Kalakshetra for 46 years, pays his respects to the stage before its demolition. This place holds countless memories for the Bangalore theatre community.

Celebrating an award for my research paper with my students who performed with me. Research is never individual work; it's an assimilation of knowledge from gurus, scholars, and the artists I work with.

A precious photo with both my classical and folk Gurus: Smt. Sheela Chandrasekhar mam and Sri Hi Chi Borlingaiya sir. I am forever indebted to my mentors.

After a podcast interview where I was asked to speak about my life's journey. It's always a reflective experience to share my story.

A behind the scenes shot from the Doordarshan studio during my interview. The green screen setup is always fascinating.

About this collection

When I teach, it is never just about the steps or the lines. My mentorship is built on the Guru-Shishya tradition, where we dive into the 'why' behind the art. Whether we are preparing a student for a Rangapravesha or exploring Karnataka folk dance, I focus on the lineage and history they are becoming part of. If you join my studio, expect to be treated as a fellow storyteller, not just a student, in a space that values process over quick results.

My approach to teaching is deeply rooted in the concept of 'Nrutya Beru'—the roots of dance. I do not just pass on techniques; I pass on the stories and the history of the land that my own gurus bestowed upon me.

The Mentorship Experience

In my workshops and long-term mentorship programs, we bridge the gap between classical rigor and folk expression. I work closely with artists and students to ensure that their performances are grounded in cultural research, not just aesthetic movement. This includes:

  • Character & Movement Training: We work on voice projection, body language, and the emotional intelligence required to portray a character, whether in a comedy play or a serious dance drama.
  • Rangapravesha Guidance: For my classical dance students, this is a sacred milestone. I am with them from the first tentative step to the final stage bow, ensuring they understand the significance of the orchestra, the nattuvangam, and the performance space.

Building the Community

My home base, Kappanna Angala in JP Nagar, serves as a hub for this artistic community. I believe that an artist is only as strong as their support system. I actively create opportunities for my students to perform, observe, and learn from other seasoned practitioners in the Bangalore theatre circuit. We don’t exist in a vacuum; we are part of a vibrant ecosystem of rehearsals, first shows, and the shared warmth of the theatre community.

From the memories of the old HN Kalakshetra to the new stages we build today, the goal is always to keep the spirit of Karnataka’s folk and theatre traditions alive and kicking. If you are looking for a space to refine your craft, study cultural history, or simply find a tribe of fellow creators, I invite you to join us.
