About Specialized & Public Architecture
For the Pechimuthu Memorial, we moved away from conventional layouts to prioritize symbolic weight. The tapered architectural form directly signifies strength and stability, while the strategic placement of skylights ensures natural light filters into the core, maintaining a quiet and contemplative atmosphere throughout the day.
We approach specialized and public architecture with the same technical rigour we apply to our commercial master planning. It is about distilling complex human sentiments—remembrance, heritage, or identity—into a permanent built form that withstands time and usage.
Design Strategy and Materiality
In our memorial projects, we employ a minimalist material palette centered on white tones to represent purity and freshness. This restraint allows the architectural form itself to dominate, rather than relying on surface ornamentation. We prioritize geometry over superficial styling, ensuring that the silhouette of the building communicates its purpose.
Technical and Structural Execution
The Pechimuthu Memorial utilizes tapered walls to create a dynamic silhouette, providing a stark contrast to the dense, lush landscaping. We integrated concealed exterior lighting fixtures to highlight these specific geometries at night, effectively transforming the structure into a beacon of stability. The site layout is designed around a winding access path that deliberately slows the visitor's pace, transitioning from the public realm into a private, meditative space.
Integration with Landscape
By aligning structural engineering with landscape architecture, we create environments that feel permanent and deeply connected to their context. We focus on the 'Cosmic Connect'—using skylights and strategic punctures to allow the internal volume to interact with the sky and natural light, ensuring the space remains light-filled even while maintaining privacy from the surrounding village context.
