Public and Community Spaces Design
We believe public spaces should be anchors for connection rather than mere transit zones. From revitalizing neighborhood plazas to creating urban markers, we design for the people who inhabit them.
**Nepean Greens, Mumbai:** We transformed a neglected space into a vibrant, stepped public plaza. The wide platforms, created from black granite with highlights of Jaisalmer stone, invite people to sit, gather, and connect, turning a simple staircase into a community hub.
**Nepean Greens, Mumbai:** The plaza is nestled within a lush green environment, offering a tranquil escape in the heart of the city. The design integrates pathways and seating with existing trees and new plantings to create a harmonious public space.
**Nepean Greens, Mumbai:** Accessibility was a key consideration. We designed a continuous, gently sloping ramp alongside the steps to ensure the plaza is welcoming and usable for the elderly and people with disabilities, connecting two streets at different levels.
**Nepean Greens, Mumbai:** A winding pathway meanders through the trees, providing a peaceful walking route within the plaza. The careful placement of lighting ensures the space is safe and inviting even after sunset.
**Nepean Greens, Mumbai:** We used gabion walls filled with colored pebbles for the benches, topped with red Lakha stone. This material choice is durable, cost-effective, and adds a unique textural element that blends with the natural surroundings.
**Nepean Greens, Mumbai:** The design uses multi-level platforms and integrated planters to break up the space and create intimate nooks. The interplay of black granite, yellow Jaisalmer stone, and greenery adds visual interest and defines different zones.
**Nepean Greens, Mumbai:** This image captures the dynamic nature of the stepped plaza, a place for both transit and pause. The design encourages informal interactions and provides a much-needed public space for the local community.
**Nepean Greens, Mumbai:** A sneak peek of the plaza's multi-level terraces and seating areas. The design provides a variety of spaces, from open platforms for groups to quieter corners for individuals, all surrounded by lush greenery.
**Nepean Greens, Mumbai:** An elevated view shows how the stepped plaza is carved into the landscape. The design respects the natural slope of the site while creating functional and beautiful platforms for community use.
**Nepean Greens, Mumbai:** The geometric forms of the planters and steps create a strong visual language. A young tree planted within a platform signifies the integration of nature and the long-term vision for the space to grow with the community.
About Public & Community Spaces
In our community work, we prioritize accessibility and human connection over mere aesthetics. At Nepean Greens, we transformed neglected steps into a tiered plaza by integrating continuous ramps and stone seating that invite lingering, not just passing through. We approach every public site by asking how the layout can encourage neighbors to gather, rather than just filling a space with structures.
Architecture for the public is rarely about the building itself. It is about the social friction, or the lack thereof, that a design facilitates. When we take on a community project, we begin with a deep analysis of movement. Are people walking, sitting, or meeting?
Our approach is highly context-sensitive. In our project at Nepean Greens, Mumbai, we encountered a neglected series of steps alongside an abandoned garden. By cladding the steps in black granite and introducing patches of yellow Jaisalmer stone, we created clear visual pathways while keeping the space durable for high-traffic public use. We also integrated a gabion wall bench using colored pebbles to provide comfortable seating that feels at home in a green, urban environment.
We also explore the role of public markers in urban landscapes. With 'The Urban Twist' in Ahmedabad, we utilized brick—a material deeply tied to the city's heritage—to create a spiral column. This was not simply a sculpture, but a way to introduce a pause in a fast-paced junction, inviting commuters to observe the intersection of motion and stillness.
Our process involves:
- Adaptive Reuse of Space: Identifying existing infrastructure, like neglected steps or open junctions, and re-imagining their utility.
- Material Honesty: Using local stone, brick, and tactile finishes that age well in the Indian climate.
- Inclusive Planning: Designing continuous ramps and pathways to ensure the space is accessible to everyone, regardless of age or physical ability.
We act as facilitators of the community's needs, ensuring that our designs encourage interaction, safety, and a sense of shared belonging.
