Institutional Architecture for Healing and Learning Spaces
We design institutional environments that prioritize the human experience. From academic campuses to hospice centers, our architecture focuses on creating spaces that foster community, healing, and quiet reflection.
A floating glass box containing a discussion room overlooks a landscaped court at the Karunashraya Institute for Palliative Care (KIPCER). The design creates transparent, light-filled spaces for learning and collaboration.
A walkthrough of the KIPCER campus, showing how the buildings are woven around existing trees and water bodies. The design creates a tranquil environment conducive to healing and education.
The dining area at the DRL Leadership Academy opens onto a landscaped central green. This seamless indoor-outdoor connection creates a pleasant, shaded space for informal activities that buzzes with life.
The central plaza at the DRL Leadership Academy acts as a buffer between the academic and residential zones. This large green walkway is flanked by trees and serves as the main axis of the campus.
Students at Vellore International School gather in an open-air courtyard. The residential wing is designed as clusters of rooms around these courts to create a sense of a smaller, family-like unit within the larger school.
The entrance to a hostel block at Vellore International School. The design uses varying levels and open passages to create a porous and interactive environment for students.
The main prayer hall at the Sai Temple in Trichy. The space is designed to be simple and serene, with a double-height volume that creates a sense of reverence and peace.
The landscape design at KIPCER includes gentle steps and ramps that navigate the site's terrain, leading towards buildings clad in locally sourced grey granite.
A water court with stepping stones next to the canteen at KIPCER. Water is used as a key element to create a soothing and reflective atmosphere.
A view across the water court towards the administrative offices. The use of large glass panels and open corridors ensures that the spaces are always connected to the natural surroundings.
About Spaces for Healing, Learning, and Reflection
In our design for the Karunashraya Institute for Palliative Care, we avoided standard clinical aesthetics by replacing harsh lighting with natural light diffused through tree canopies. By using rough-hewn, locally sourced grey granite and open water courts, we created a rhythm of movement and stillness that supports patients and families, proving that institutional spaces can feel inherently humane and grounded.
Whether it is student housing at Vellore International School or a spiritual sanctuary in Trichy, our design philosophy remains consistent: architecture should be a quiet, supporting presence. We do not design for imposition, but for integration.
At our educational projects, such as the DRL Leadership Academy, we move beyond standard academic planning. By utilizing green mounds to tuck away service areas and creating central plazas that serve as buffers, we prioritize how students move and interact. Our hostels are designed as smaller, family-like units, ensuring that large campuses feel intimate and personal.
In institutional settings, particularly our work on palliative care, the material palette is a vital tool. We rely on locally sourced materials, like grey granite and white plaster, because they offer a neutral, grounding backdrop that allows nature to take center stage. Through the use of water courts and diffused light, we create environments that reduce anxiety and encourage community connection. Every project is an attempt to solve the puzzle of its specific site, ensuring that the final structure fits its context while offering a distinct, peaceful identity for its users.
