About this collection
When we perform as an ensemble, the technical challenge is always the geometry. We spend hours in the studio aligning our formations and spacing so that when you watch us from the audience, the performance feels like a single, unified expression of the story rather than individual dancers moving on stage.
Performing as part of the Chithkala Ensemble is a different kind of joy compared to solo work. While my solo recitals are a personal dialogue with the audience, these group productions allow us to explore grander themes and more complex, multi-layered storytelling.
Our Approach to Ensemble Work
Every production, such as 'Thyagaraja Hrt Sadana,' is conceptualized and choreographed by my Guru, Sri P. Praveen Kumar. We strictly adhere to the Thanjavur Bani style, known for its emphasis on crisp movements, clean lines, and a high degree of precision. For our group shows, we focus heavily on symmetry and synchronized timing—essential elements that make Bharatanatyam visually arresting.
What Goes Into a Performance
- Coordinated Visuals: We use color-coordinated costumes and uniform stage makeup to create a cohesive aesthetic that complements the narrative.
- Technical Precision: Because we perform as a unit, we place high importance on rehearsals to ensure every dancer is in sync, particularly during complex rhythmic patterns.
- Narrative Depth: Whether we are portraying the lives of saints or episodes from mythology, our group pieces are designed to draw you into the story, supported by a rich, traditional Carnatic soundscape.
We bring this same rigour to every show, whether it is for a formal festival stage or a private event. If you are looking for an ensemble that respects the traditional roots of the dance while presenting it with a fresh, contemporary polish, these group productions might be the perfect fit for your event.
