Move beyond just the physical postures. Explore how the Iyengar method uses alignment, props, and intention to build a practice that engages your mind as much as your body.

The word 'alignment' is often misunderstood. It is not about forcing your body into a flat shape, but about aligning your awareness between the front and back of your body. This internal focus is what brings intelligence and sensitivity to each asana.

Many of us are drawn to yoga because we dislike conventional exercise. I believe asana practice becomes truly engaging when the mind is involved. We use physical effort as a means to prepare for more complex, meaningful asanas, transforming exercise into a mindful exploration.

The same sequence of poses can feel completely different based on your intention. In this class, we explored how internal instructions can dramatically change the effect of our practice, turning physical movements into a meditative experience of calm alertness.

My teaching is rooted in the Indian Gurukul tradition, where the teacher-student relationship is one of deep responsibility and shared learning. I started my own journey in New York, but it was in India that I learned to live the subject, a value I strive to pass on to my students.

B.K.S. Iyengar's book 'Light on Life' is a beautiful guide to the philosophy of yoga. It explains how asana practice is a gateway to the deeper layers, or koshas, of our being. This is a book I love to share and reread with my students to connect our physical practice to its philosophical roots.

Mr. Iyengar said, "When I practice I am a philosopher, when I teach I am a scientist, and when I demonstrate I am an artist." These three books, Light on Yoga, Light on the Yoga Sutras, and Light on Life, are essential to understanding the depth of his work, and they form the foundation of what I share in my classes.

About The Iyengar Method: Philosophy in Practice

If you often feel bored by repetitive exercise, you might be missing the intellectual 'why' behind the movement. In our Iyengar sessions in Bangalore, we don't just hold poses; we use specific internal instructions to align your awareness between the front and back of the body. This shifts the focus from merely 'doing' to 'understanding,' making your time on the mat feel like a guided investigation rather than a repetitive chore.

Understanding the 'Why' in Yoga

Many students come to us after years of drifting through generic exercise classes, feeling physically active but mentally disengaged. The Iyengar method offers a different path. As B.K.S. Iyengar noted, 'Action is movement with intelligence.' In our studio, we treat every asana as a Socratic dialogue between the body and the mind. We use props like wall ropes, chairs, and blocks not as shortcuts, but as tools to create a safe, supportive environment where you can observe your own habits and limitations without judgment.

The Anatomy of Awareness

When we talk about alignment, we are not just discussing the shape of your body in a mirror. We are talking about aligning your awareness. Whether you are working on a foundational standing pose or a complex inversion, we break down the mechanics—the rotation of joints, the engagement of muscles—to provide a scientific basis for your practice. This precision transforms a simple stretch into a meaningful exploration of your own physiology.

Integrating Philosophy

Our practice is deeply rooted in texts like the Yoga Sutras. We explore concepts like the koshas (sheaths of being) and how the physical body serves as the gateway to deeper meditative states. This isn't abstract theory; it's practical application. By learning to manage your breath and refine your focus during a 75-minute class, you build the capacity to carry that same calm alertness into your daily life.

Whether you are an athlete looking to recover, someone managing chronic pain, or a beginner seeking a structured, honest approach to yoga, our philosophy is simple: honesty, hard work, and an open mind. We invite you to step into the studio and experience this systematic approach for yourself.
