Move beyond just the physical postures. Explore how the Iyengar method uses alignment, props, and intention to build a practice that engages your mind as much as your body.

The word 'alignment' is often misunderstood. It is not about forcing your body into a flat shape, but about aligning your awareness between the front and back of your body. This internal focus is what brings intelligence and sensitivity to each asana.

Many of us are drawn to yoga because we dislike conventional exercise. I believe asana practice becomes truly engaging when the mind is involved. We use physical effort as a means to prepare for more complex, meaningful asanas, transforming exercise into a mindful exploration.

The same sequence of poses can feel completely different based on your intention. In this class, we explored how internal instructions can dramatically change the effect of our practice, turning physical movements into a meditative experience of calm alertness.

My teaching is rooted in the Indian Gurukul tradition, where the teacher-student relationship is one of deep responsibility and shared learning. I started my own journey in New York, but it was in India that I learned to live the subject, a value I strive to pass on to my students.

B.K.S. Iyengar's book 'Light on Life' is a beautiful guide to the philosophy of yoga. It explains how asana practice is a gateway to the deeper layers, or koshas, of our being. This is a book I love to share and reread with my students to connect our physical practice to its philosophical roots.

Mr. Iyengar said, "When I practice I am a philosopher, when I teach I am a scientist, and when I demonstrate I am an artist." These three books, Light on Yoga, Light on the Yoga Sutras, and Light on Life, are essential to understanding the depth of his work, and they form the foundation of what I share in my classes.

About The Iyengar Method: Philosophy in Practice

If you often feel bored by repetitive exercise, you might be missing the intellectual 'why' behind the movement. In our Iyengar sessions in Bangalore, we don't just hold poses; we use specific internal instructions to align your awareness between the front and back of the body. This shifts the focus from merely 'doing' to 'understanding,' making your time on the mat feel like a guided investigation rather than a repetitive chore.
