For athletes and dancers, movement is your profession. We use the Iyengar method to help you build strength, improve recovery, and find alignment that supports your specific discipline, whether you are on the court or the stage.

What's more inspiring than seeing a world-class athlete like Rohan Bopanna owning his yoga practice? He has fully integrated yoga into his training, replacing gym work with asana and strengthening exercises to support his professional tennis career.

It is always a pleasure to collaborate with Rohan Bopanna and the "Doubles Dream of India" initiative. This workshop with professional tennis players focused on how asana and breath work can be an invaluable aid for preparation, performance, and recovery.

Here, a coach assists a tennis player in a supported shoulder stand variation using the wall. This pose is excellent for recovery, calming the nervous system, and improving circulation after intense training.

Using blocks and a belt, we work on opening the hamstrings and creating length in the spine for this athlete. This kind of targeted work with props helps address the specific tightness and imbalances that can result from repetitive movements in sports.

For years, I have had the pleasure of teaching yoga to the dancers at Nrityagram, a world-renowned Odissi dance school. It has been a beautiful association where I have learned as much from them and their intricate art form as they have from the asana practice.

This video shows the first week of a summer workshop, supporting the Nrityagram dancers through asana practice. The goal is to develop a practice that specifically supports and enables their demanding physical work, improving strength, flexibility, and body awareness.

Another view from the tennis players' workshop, highlighting one of the five focus areas. A strong standing pose practice is fundamental for athletes to build stability and power from the ground up.

About Yoga for Peak Performance: Athletes & Dancers

For athletes and dancers, we focus on targeted recovery rather than just stretching. We use props like wall ropes and chairs to decompress the spine and isolate tight muscle groups, ensuring your body stays resilient and mobile. This is a practical approach to maintaining your range of motion and preventing the injuries that often come with high-intensity training.

Why Iyengar for Performance

When your body is your instrument, simply stretching is not enough. We treat your practice like a lab. Whether you are managing the rotational demands of tennis or the extreme flexibility required in classical dance, our approach centers on structural integrity. We break down complex movements into small, manageable alignments, teaching you how to use your joints efficiently so you can move without compensation.

The Role of Props

You will see wall ropes, chairs, and wooden blocks in our studio. These are not crutches. They allow us to hold specific, challenging positions longer without compromising safety. This helps athletes isolate a single muscle group, such as the hamstrings or the rotator cuff, to strengthen it precisely.

Our Experience

We have had the privilege of working with professionals, including Rohan Bopanna and the dancers at Nrityagram. These collaborations taught us that an athlete’s need for yoga is unique; it is about longevity. We focus on:

  • Spinal traction: Used to reverse the compression caused by repetitive impact.
  • Supported inversions: Used to assist with nervous system recovery and lymphatic drainage.
  • Micro-adjustments: Used to build strength from the ground up, ensuring stability in your standing poses and lunges.

We do not just guide you through a sequence. We teach you how to analyze your own movement patterns. This is the difference between blindly following a video and truly understanding your anatomy.
