The Art of Tabla: Solos and Traditional Practice
A look into my daily riyaaz and the deep tradition of the Punjab Gharana. This is where I share solo performances, technical compositions, and the rhythm that lives in my soul.
A short solo performance at night, surrounded by nature. This is me in my element, just me and my tabla, speaking the language of rhythm.
Presenting a traditional Kaida in Teentaal. These foundational compositions are the building blocks of tabla playing, and I enjoy practicing and perfecting them.
Here is a Chakardaar composition in Chartaal ki Sawari (11 beats) by my Guru, Ustad Fazal Qureshi ji. It is a privilege to learn and play the intricate compositions of my guru.
Practicing a Dhir Dhir rela in Tishra Jati. This is a fast-paced composition that requires precision and stamina, a great piece for daily riyaaz.

A casual jam session at home, covering a ghazal by Ustad Mehdi Hassan. Sometimes the most soulful music happens in these informal moments.
About The Art of Tabla: Solos & Practice
Playing tabla is my way of feeling and sharing life, and these solo videos are a look at my daily riyaaz (practice). Whether I am presenting a traditional Kaida in Teentaal or the fast-paced energy of a Dhir Dhir rela, my goal is to keep the techniques of the Punjab Gharana pure. These aren't just performances; they are snapshots of my dedication to the lineage of Ustad Alla Rakha Khan Sahib and my Guru, Ustad Fazal Qureshi ji.
The compositions you see here—like the Chakradhar or the Laal Killa Gat—are the foundation of my craft. They aren't just patterns; they are stories told through rhythm. My process focuses on the clarity of 'bols' (strokes) and finding that perfect 'sam' (first beat) that brings a piece to life.
Why these compositions matter
In Indian classical music, practicing these foundational forms is how we build stamina and precision. When you watch these, you're seeing the result of hours spent at the instrument, tuning the Dayacom and Bayan, and preparing my hands to be an extension of my thoughts.
Performing at your event
While I love the discipline of solo practice, I thrive in live environments. Whether you want an intimate baithak (house concert) where the sound of the wood is raw and unamplified, or a formal recital, I bring this same technical rigor to the stage.
I am based in Mumbai but travel across India to perform. If you are looking for authentic tabla accompaniment for a vocalist, instrumentalist, or a standalone solo recital, I invite you to reach out. Let’s talk about the vibe you want to create and how we can bring the beauty of traditional rhythm to your space.
Harmeet Singh
I’m Harmeet, and my turban and tabla are the two things I hold closest to my heart. I’ve been blessed to learn from the best, and I try to pour that wisdom into every beat I play. It is a simple life—just me, the rhythm, and the search for the perfect sam.
