Every rhythmic cycle is a journey. Here is a glimpse into my daily practice of the Punjab Gharana, exploring traditional compositions, kayada, and the taal that grounds my music.

Playing a beautiful rela composition in Rupak taal, a 7-beat cycle. This piece ends with a Chakradar Tihai, a complex rhythmic pattern repeated three times. This is the pure soul of Indian classical music.

A beautiful 'kayada' from the Punjab Gharana. This black and white video focuses on the grace, depth, and strength of this traditional Indian classical music form.

Immersing in the soulful rhythms of the Punjab Gharana by the sea. The sound of the waves and the rhythm of the tabla felt like a perfect jugalbandi (duet).

Exploring a Chalan in Teental, a 16-beat cycle, with some spontaneous variations. This is how we practice, by taking a base composition and building upon it.

Presenting compositions from the Punjab Gharana. This style is known for its powerful and intricate patterns, and I am thankful for all the love and support I receive when I share it.

This traditional bandish is more than music to me, it is a prayer. In every note and rhythm, I feel the grace of my Guruji.

Exploring a traditional Qaida in Teental. This is a fundamental composition in tabla, and I am grateful for the journey of learning these deep traditions.

A glimpse into Taal Roopak, playing a traditional Qaida with some improvisational paltas (variations) and a tihai (concluding phrase).

Celebrating World Music Day with the rhythms of the soul. The tabla is a universal language, connecting us through the power of beats and soundscapes.

"Ek koshish." Just a simple, honest attempt during my daily practice. This is where the real work happens.

About Traditional Solo & Practice (Riyaz)

When I sit for riyaz, I focus on the 'Khula Baaj' (open hand) style typical of the Punjab Gharana. Whether I am working through a complex Teentaal composition or refining a delicate Rela, the focus remains on capturing that raw resonance. If you are a fellow musician or student, we can break down these patterns together to refine your own approach to the instrument.

My riyaz is my conversation with the tradition passed down by my Guruji, Ustad Joginder Singh Ji. The Punjab Gharana is known for its clarity and power, and I dedicate my daily practice to maintaining this. You will see me exploring diverse cycles like Teentaal, Roopak, and others, often deconstructing them into Paltas (variations) and ending with traditional Tihai phrases.

What defines this practice

  • Punjab Gharana Nuances: I emphasize 'Khula Baaj,' ensuring the bass resonance of the Bayan balances the crisp clarity of the Dayan.
  • Technical Deep Dives: From complex Chakradar patterns to traditional Qaida, my goal is to maintain the purity of the compositions while allowing for spontaneous improvisations.
  • Spiritual Connection: For me, these sessions are not just about technique; they are a form of meditation. Whether playing by the sea in Mumbai or in a quiet practice space, the goal is always to surrender to the Taal.

I do not just practice for myself. I share these sessions to invite others into the fold—whether you are a composer looking for a specific classical texture or a student who wants to understand the 'Kridha' or 'Tirkit' bol mechanics. If you are curious about the mechanics of the Punjab Gharana or simply want to listen to how a traditional composition evolves from a simple base to a complex rhythmic structure, I am happy to connect and explore the beauty of this language together.

Tabla is my entire world, a spiritual journey guided by the blessings of my parents and my Ustadji. I am a student of the Punjab Gharana, trying to speak the language of bols and taals with complete sincerity.
