About Intimate Baithaks & Classical Recitals
For a baithak, sound quality matters as much as the performance itself. I use professional Sennheiser instrument microphones to ensure that every subtle nuance, whether it is a delicate bol or a complex tihai, comes through clearly in your living room or performance space. I bring my own Punjab Gharana setup and handle all instrument logistics within Mumbai, so you can focus entirely on the music and the moment.
A baithak is different from a large concert. There is no stage separating the artist from the audience; it is just the music and the listeners. My goal during these sessions is to create a genuine connection. Trained in the Punjab Gharana tradition under Ustad Fazal Qureshi ji, I focus on the conversation between the tabla and the lead instrument, be it sitar, sarod, or flute.
Whether you are hosting a formal music evening or an intimate house gathering, I adapt my playing style to the room's energy. I perform using a professional Dayan and Bayan set, tuned to the specific scale of your vocalist or instrumentalist, ensuring a perfectly balanced sound. Because these gatherings are small, I prioritize clarity, using clip-on instrument mics to capture the soul of the performance without overpowering the room.
What to expect:
- Collaboration: I have extensive experience accompanying maestros and peers. I am comfortable with both fixed compositions and spontaneous sawal-jawab (musical call and response).
- Flexibility: I understand that every venue in Mumbai, from a Juhu apartment to a South Mumbai drawing room, has unique acoustics. I always arrive 45 minutes early for an acoustic check.
- Tradition: I perform in traditional Indian attire, such as a kurta-pyjama with a turban, to honor the setting and the art form.
If you have a vocalist or instrumentalist joining, I am happy to coordinate with them before the event to discuss the raga and the flow of the evening. Let's make your next musical gathering something truly special.
Harmeet Singh
Music for me is a way of life and a constant, humble riyaaz passed down from my gurus. I do not just show up to play; I show up to listen and converse with the melody. When we sit together for a baithak, it is not a gig, but a shared moment of devotion and rhythm.
