We start with the staff. In our Shahpur Jat dojo, we master the weapon by mastering ourselves, using traditional Shaolin methods to build coordination, focus, and strength.

The staff is one of the foundational weapons of Shaolin Kung Fu. This pose, captured during my training in China, demonstrates the balance and power required to master it.

A student practices fundamental drills for stickwork. These exercises build wrist strength, coordination, and an understanding of how the weapon becomes an extension of the body.

About Weapon Training

Before you touch a sword, you must master the staff. We start here because the long staff forces you to control your center of gravity and develop genuine wrist strength. If you cannot control the wood, you are not ready for the steel. We practice until the weapon feels like a natural extension of your body, not an awkward, separate object you are swinging around.

Weapon training at Damo Shaolin is not about looking cinematic for social media. It is about understanding the mechanics of force and leverage. The staff, or gun, is the foundational weapon in our curriculum for a reason. You will spend significant time on basic rotational drills—what we call stickwork—to build dexterity and core stability.

Only when your balance is solid do we introduce more complex patterns. We train in our Shahpur Jat studio, a space built for focus. You will learn to move with the weight of the weapon, not against it. This is why we emphasize repetition. Whether you are a total beginner or an experienced practitioner, you will find that weapon training sharpens your hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness in a way that empty-hand training cannot.

Our training is not just physical; it is a test of your patience. If you are looking for a quick trick to show off, this is not the place. If you are looking for the traditional Shaolin path of skill and discipline, step into the dojo.
