The Capoeira Roda: Discover the Joy of Playful Movement
The Roda is where Capoeira comes alive. It is not a fight, but a playful conversation of movement, music, and community where children and adults alike discover their own flow.
Two students 'play' in the roda, surrounded by their classmates who provide the energy by clapping and singing. This is where they apply the kicks, dodges, and movements they have learned.
A dynamic exchange between two young players in the roda. They practice the art of call and response, using fluid movements and evasive 'esquivas' to interact.
Instructors demonstrate advanced movements in the roda, showcasing the fluidity and power of Capoeira for the students watching.
Capoeira is a game of constant motion. This clip shows various students, from kids to adults, practicing their flow and partner work in different class settings.
About The Roda: The Heart of Capoeira
In our Roda, we prioritize the energy over the intensity of the kicks. You won't find aggressive sparring here. Instead, you will see students learning to anticipate their partner's movement, singing traditional songs in Portuguese, and practicing the art of the 'ginga' (fundamental sway). It is the most authentic way to see how we build friendship through rhythm and safe physical play.
The Roda is the circle where we all meet. It is the heart of every class, where the energy — or Axé — shifts from individual practice to a collective experience. When you step into our classes in Bangalore or Mumbai, you will see that the Roda is less about winning and more about listening.
We start by forming a circle, clapping, and singing traditional Portuguese songs. This isn't just decoration; the music sets the pace for the players inside. The berimbau, our signature bow-shaped instrument, dictates whether the game inside should be slow and tactical or fast and acrobatic.
Inside the circle, two students engage in a 'game.' They trade movements, dodging kicks and responding with their own flows. Because we teach kids as young as two, we focus on safe, non-contact interaction. It teaches them to be aware of their body and their partner's presence without the pressure of a fight.
It is common to see parents joining in, too. We believe that when you share the Roda, you share a piece of Brazilian culture. It is not about perfect form from day one; it is about showing up, finding your rhythm, and letting the community support your growth. Whether you are a total beginner or looking to refine your handstands, the Roda is where you find the people who will become your tribe.
