Backbends & Flexibility: Safe, Prop-Based Training in Janakpuri
Backbends are not just about bending; they are about opening the heart and building spinal health. I guide you step-by-step using props to ensure proper alignment, helping you move safely regardless of your current flexibility level.
Backbends are a favorite at our studio because they demonstrate the beautiful blend of flexibility and strength. Here, we use a chair to support a student in a variation of Dhanurasana, allowing for a deeper opening of the chest and shoulders while protecting the lower back.
One-on-one attention is crucial for refining your practice. Here, I am providing support in Dhanurasana (Bow Pose), helping the student lift higher and open the chest more fully, ensuring they get the maximum benefit from this heart-opening posture.
The yoga journey builds patience, willpower, and strength. This sequence shows how we use props like a chair to assist in deep backbends, allowing students to hold the posture longer and work on their flexibility and mental endurance.
We are dedicated to refining your skills through precise alignment and partner work. This video shows how one practitioner can support another in a standing backbend, fostering trust and allowing for a deeper, more assisted stretch than one could achieve alone.
"Khudgarz ban," or "be selfish," is a reminder to love yourself first. This assisted backbend is an act of self-care, where a partner helps deepen the stretch, opening the heart and releasing tension. Our training emphasizes this balance of effort and surrender.
Backbends are powerful heart chakra openers. This video shows a student moving into a deep backbend with instructor assistance, a beautiful practice that cultivates vulnerability, compassion, and emotional release.
Here, students in our group class practice Chakrasana (Wheel Pose) together. Even in a group setting, you can see the individual focus and effort as each person works on their own spinal flexibility and upper body strength.
"Yoga is the practice of quieting the mind." This video shows a student moving from a deep forward fold into a powerful backbend, demonstrating the fluid connection between surrender and strength that we cultivate in our classes.
Practice is the sacred fire that fuels progress. This clip shows students working on advanced backbends, a testament to our philosophy that consistent effort is how you upgrade your skills and deepen your yogic journey.
This sequence shows a hands-on adjustment for a preparatory backbend pose. I guide the student to safely deepen the stretch, targeting the quadriceps and hip flexors, which is essential for more advanced back-bending postures.
About Deepening Your Practice: Backbends & Flexibility
In this practice, I prioritize the safety of your lower back. We avoid forcing a pose. Instead, we use chairs, bolsters, and rope walls to create space for your spine to open naturally. If you feel tightness or fear in your back, we break the movement down into manageable, supported steps, ensuring you build confidence before attempting deeper variations.
Many people hesitate with backbends because the spine feels vulnerable. My approach is rooted in the precision of Iyengar yoga, where we use props not as a crutch, but as tools for geometric precision and structural support. Whether we are working on Ustrasana or preparing for deeper wheels, the focus remains on the 'Sthoola sharir' (physical body) and 'Sookshma sharir' (subtle body).
We don't look for a 'quick fix' flexibility boost. We look for 'Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam'—excellence in action. If you feel tight, we don't push through pain; we adjust the angle or use a support to release the tension in the chest and shoulders.
This is how I structure the progress:
- Foundation: Strengthening the core and opening the thoracic spine to take pressure off the lower back.
- Support: Using wall ropes and blocks to hold alignment, allowing the nervous system to relax into the stretch.
- Integration: Moving into the pose with breath and intention rather than momentum.
My goal is to teach you how to maintain a healthy spine for the long term. This training is suitable for those looking to advance their personal practice or for teachers seeking to learn the 'art of adjustment' to keep their own students safe.
