The Science & Soul of Yoga: Anatomy & Alignment
Yoga is more than what you see on the mat. It’s a deep dive into alignment, anatomy, and your own energetic body. Whether you’re here to learn the 'why' behind a posture or deepen your practice, this is where we break it down.
"Aap prayaas keejiye, safalta uske haath mein hai." (You make the effort, success is in His hands). This video, showing the dedicated practice of a student, embodies our core philosophy that consistent effort is our duty, while the results are part of a larger plan.
This graphic illustrates several yoga poses for balancing the Svadhisthana (Sacral) Chakra, the center of creativity and emotions. Our training delves into the energetic body, teaching you how asanas can influence the chakras and promote holistic well-being.
A repeat of the Svadhisthana Chakra graphic, emphasizing the importance of balancing our energetic centers for complete physical, mental, and social well-being. We explore poses like Baddha Konasana and Paschimottanasana to work with this energy.
A detailed breakdown of Chaturanga Dandasana. Proper alignment is critical to prevent injury and build strength effectively. We teach these key points, such as keeping elbows in and activating the core, as part of our foundational training.
As Sandeep Maheshwari explains, expert guidance is crucial to avoid injury and ensure your practice is safe and effective. This is the core of our mission: to provide the mentorship you need to learn correctly and build a lifelong, injury-free yoga practice.
This image clearly shows the right and wrong way to perform Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward-Facing Dog). We emphasize these alignment details in our teacher training to ensure you can practice and teach this common vinyasa pose safely.
Did you know the low lunge has many benefits? This anatomical graphic shows how the stretch opens the thigh, groin, and chest. We incorporate this knowledge into our classes, explaining the 'why' behind each posture.
This graphic illustrates the correct alignment for Malasana (Garland Pose). We focus on details like keeping the spine long and heels grounded to ensure you receive the full benefits of this deep squat for hip opening and digestion.
This diagram shows the correct and incorrect alignment for Warrior III (Virabhadrasana III). Our training emphasizes keeping the hips parallel to the floor and the torso engaged to build true balance and stability in standing poses.
A duplicate of the low-lunge anatomical graphic, reinforcing its importance for athletes and anyone looking to open up the hips and chest. Understanding the muscles involved is a key part of our teacher training curriculum.
About The Science & Soul of Yoga
Most people treat asanas as a workout, ignoring the anatomical mechanics involved. Whether it's the alignment of your spine in Malasana or the core engagement in Chaturanga, understanding the 'why' changes everything. I use my medical background to teach you exactly how to position your body to prevent injury, so you don't just do yoga—you understand how your body responds to every hold.
Yoga is not just about flexibility—it’s about structural intelligence. When you train with us at our Janakpuri studio, we don't just hold poses; we deconstruct them. I focus heavily on the mechanics—how the spine aligns, where the weight rests, and how breath dictates movement. This is the science of yoga, and it’s why I integrate Iyengar-style alignment principles into every session. We use props like wall ropes, blocks, and bolsters not to make things easier, but to guide the body into the correct geometric shape required for a safe, effective practice.
The soul of the practice lies deeper. We explore the Sthoola (physical) and Sookshma (subtle) sharir, looking at how asanas impact your energetic body, from the chakra centers to your mental state. If you’re practicing without understanding the internal logic, you’re missing half the benefit. That’s why our teacher training and advanced sessions are rooted in medical anatomy and traditional philosophy.
Whether you are here for PCOS-focused therapy, to master a difficult inversion, or to start your RYT-200 certification, the approach remains the same: Aap bas prayaas keejiye (just make the effort). We don’t chase perfection; we chase understanding. Learn the correct way to engage, breathe, and align, and you’ll find that the results—strength, flexibility, and peace of mind—come naturally.
