Breathwork & Yogic Cleansing Techniques in Delhi
Pollution and daily stress take a toll on our breath. I teach ancient pranayama and cleansing kriyas to detoxify your system, boost lung capacity, and clear your mind.
Living in a polluted city or traveling to high altitudes can take a toll on our lungs. In this video from Rishikesh, I explain and demonstrate Bhastrika Pranayama, a powerful two-minute breathing exercise that can significantly boost lung capacity, increase oxygen levels, and combat issues like shortness of breath.
When you travel to the mountains, you might experience breathlessness due to the altitude. I recommend practicing specific pranayama techniques, like the one I demonstrate here, for a few days before your trip. This practice helps strengthen your lungs and makes acclimatization much easier.
How you breathe matters more than you think. In this talk, I break down the difference between nose breathing and mouth breathing. Your nose is a natural filter that protects your lungs, and learning to breathe through it correctly is fundamental for good health, better sleep, and a calmer nervous system.
Udyan Bandha, or the abdominal lock, is a powerful yogic practice I'm demonstrating here by a waterfall in Rishikesh. This kriya tones the abdominal organs, improves digestion, and stimulates the flow of energy through the body. It is an advanced technique that should be learned under proper guidance.
Jal Neti is a traditional yogic cleansing technique that I teach to help clear the nasal passages and sinuses. This practice is incredibly effective for combating allergies, colds, and the effects of pollution. In this outdoor session, you can see how we practice this simple yet powerful method for better respiratory health.
About Breathwork & Yogic Cleansing (Pranayama & Kriyas)
Most of us have forgotten how to breathe properly, relying on shallow mouth breathing that ignores our body’s natural filtration system. In my sessions, we do not just do exercises, we retrain your system to use the nose effectively. Whether it is clearing sinus congestion with Jal Neti or boosting oxygen levels with Bhastrika, we focus on methods that you can actually sustain daily to combat Delhi’s pollution and everyday stress.
Beyond Stretching: The Science of Your Breath
Yoga is not just about flexibility; it is an internal journey. When I teach pranayama, my goal is to help you align your mind, body, and soul. Many students come to me thinking they need to be flexible to practice, but for breathwork, the only requirement is your willingness to start.
Core Practices We Explore:
- Bhastrika Pranayama: I recommend this for anyone dealing with shortness of breath or the impact of city pollution. Just two minutes of daily practice can significantly increase your lung capacity and oxygen levels.
- Jal Neti: A powerful cleansing kriya that passes saline water through nasal passages. It is one of the most effective ways to manage seasonal allergies, frequent colds, and sinus congestion.
- Udyan Bandha: An advanced abdominal lock used to tone internal organs and stimulate digestion. This is a practice I usually introduce once you have a stable foundation in basic breath control.
Why Nose Breathing Matters
Your nose is a natural filter that protects your lungs. Mouth breathing, especially in a polluted environment like Delhi, often leads to respiratory fatigue and weakens your jaw muscles. We work on shifting this habit so you can sleep better, focus deeper, and stay calm.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, remember what I often say: Yoga se he hoga. Start with your breath, and the rest will follow. Whether you are dealing with chronic congestion or just want to feel more energized, these techniques provide a practical, non-medicinal way to take control of your health.
