Audumbara: Sustainable Living Built from the Earth
Audumbara is a home that breathes. By using compressed earth blocks and traditional jack-arch roofs, we created a space that stays cool naturally while feeling completely grounded in its surroundings.
The exterior of Audumbara showcases the beauty of Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB) and traditional Mangalore tile roofs. The design incorporates solar panels, reflecting a commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

About Audumbara: A Home Built from the Earth
Building with earth is not just an aesthetic choice; it is a commitment to a healthier living environment. At Audumbara, we used compressed stabilized earth blocks (CSEB) made directly on-site to reduce transportation energy and improve thermal comfort. Before you start planning your own build, consider if you are ready to embrace the unique textures and natural irregularities that come with these raw, sustainable materials.
Audumbara is more than just a residence; it is a case study in how modern comfort can exist within a climate-responsive envelope. We designed this home with the tropical Bangalore climate in mind, prioritizing passive cooling over artificial systems.
The Architecture of Earth
The core structure relies on Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB). By manufacturing these bricks on-site, we eliminated the carbon footprint associated with traditional kiln-fired bricks. These blocks offer excellent thermal mass, keeping the interior temperatures stable throughout the day. The exposed brickwork is paired with lime plaster and Mangalore tile roofs, creating a timeless aesthetic that ages gracefully.
Designing for Air and Light
One of the biggest challenges in urban home design is creating privacy while inviting natural ventilation. At Audumbara, we solved this with a double-height living area that acts as a thermal chimney, drawing hot air up and out. We incorporated a series of arched openings and circular windows to channel breezes throughout the house. The use of jack-arch roofing further reduces the need for concrete, lowering the overall embodied energy of the structure.
Our Process
We believe in complete transparency from design to execution. Whether we are planning your layout, sourcing local stone like Kota or Jaisalmer for your flooring, or designing custom furniture to fit your space, we keep you involved. If you are looking to build or renovate a home that respects the land and your lifestyle, let us talk about how we can make that happen.
Tropic Responses
I’m Sanjay, and at Tropic Responses, I help homeowners move away from cookie-cutter designs. I believe your home should work with the climate, not against it, which is why I’m obsessed with local materials like earth and lime.
