Homes That Breathe: Sustainable Design in Bangalore
I design homes that connect with the land. By prioritizing natural light, cross-ventilation, and honest local materials, I create spaces that feel alive and rooted in their environment.
The entrance to a private residence, designed to be a tranquil transition from the outside world. I used natural stone, warm lighting, and integrated planters to create a welcoming and organic entryway.
The play of light and shade is a fundamental part of my design philosophy. Here, rectangular skylights cast rhythmic patterns on the floor, turning a simple covered walkway into a dynamic, sun-drenched space.
A different angle of the walkway, showing how the light patterns move and change, and how the textured exterior wall catches the light. These small details bring a building to life throughout the day.
A direct view of the light-filled entryway, showcasing the clean lines of the skylights and the warm tones of the wall panels.
Another perspective on the play of light, emphasizing the texture of the exterior wall and the clean, modern window frame.
About Homes That Breathe
When I design, the play of light is just as important as the floor plan. Instead of relying solely on artificial lighting, I use skylights and strategically placed openings that let the sun dictate the rhythm of your home. This approach turns a static hallway or living area into a dynamic space that shifts with the time of day, making the transition between your outdoor and indoor life feel seamless.
My approach to residential architecture is rooted in passive design. A home should not just be a structure; it should be a living system that breathes. I achieve this by working with vernacular techniques that reduce energy consumption and maximize comfort.
The Role of Materiality
I believe in letting materials speak for themselves. In my projects, you will often find exposed wire-cut bricks, terracotta, and raw concrete. These are not just aesthetic choices; they are functional. These materials have thermal mass properties that help regulate indoor temperatures, keeping your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. By avoiding excessive plastering and paints, we keep the building honest.
Designing for Bangalore’s Climate
Bangalore has a unique climate that allows for a deep connection with the outdoors. I focus on:
- Cross-Ventilation: Positioning windows and openings to capture prevailing breezes.
- Natural Light: Utilizing courtyards and skylights to reduce the need for electrical lighting during the day.
- Vernacular Details: Incorporating jalli screens and pergolas to filter sunlight and ensure privacy while maintaining airflow.
The Process
Whether you are building a new house from the ground up or restoring an older property, I manage the end-to-end process. This includes everything from the initial structural engineering and conceptual layouts to material procurement and site supervision. My goal is to ensure the design fidelity is maintained from the first sketch to the final handover, ensuring your home is built to last.
