Yoga for Kids' Growth and Focus
Yoga isn't just exercise for your child, it is a foundation for their life. I teach specific asanas to improve focus, posture, and emotional regulation, helping them grow stronger inside and out.
This video is a quick guide to ten essential yoga poses for kids and their mental benefits. From Vrikshasana for balance to Padmasana for a stable mind, each asana is a step towards better concentration, emotional regulation, and cognitive development.
In this photo, you can see me demonstrating Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) while a young student mirrors the posture in the background. This is how I teach, by doing it with them, ensuring they understand the form and feel of the pose correctly.
A young student holds Vrikshasana (Tree Pose) with focus and stability. As the voiceover explains, true happiness comes when our mind, heart, and actions are aligned. Poses like this are the physical practice of finding that inner balance and coherence.
Here, I am providing gentle, hands-on assistance to a student in a seated forward bend. This ensures they get the full benefit of the stretch safely, helping to release tension and improve flexibility, which is crucial for growing bodies.
About Poses for Growth & Focus
Getting children to focus is not about telling them to sit still. In my studio, I use Iyengar-style rope walls and gravity-assisted stretches to physically correct their posture, which is often compromised by long hours at a desk or screen. By combining these physical alignments with Trataka for concentration and pranayama for emotional regulation, I help children build real, tangible focus from the ground up.
When I see children today, I see the same stress and exhaustion I felt when I was younger. Their minds are constantly running. My approach is to use the mat as a mirror for them, just as it was for me.
The Method
I do not believe in generic routines. For kids, my sessions are built around two pillars: physical elongation and mental stillness. We use props like blocks and belts to ensure every asana is done with correct alignment, preventing injury and ensuring the body grows as it should. The rope wall is a specific tool I use for spinal elongation, which helps in natural growth and posture correction.
Mental Discipline
Focus is a muscle, and it needs training. We practice Trataka, a gazing exercise, to quiet the overthinking mind and improve attention spans. For children dealing with anger or big, overwhelming emotions, we use pranayama to anchor their energy. It is not just about keeping them busy; it is about giving them tools to handle their internal world.
Creating a Space
Whether we are doing a 'Little Ganesha' pose or working on balance in Vrikshasana, my goal is to make the practice enjoyable. I keep batch sizes limited to 8 to 12 kids because I need to provide hands-on support. I am not looking to just teach poses; I am looking to plant seeds for a lifetime of mindfulness. If you want your child to learn how to manage stress before it takes hold of their life, we should talk.
