Yoga at The Shala: More Than Just Poses

Yoga isn't about perfectly performed poses or reaching some ultimate flexibility. Here, we embrace the mess, the breath, and the honest journey of showing up.

I'm often asked if yoga practice is always supposed to feel good. The honest answer is no. True transformation happens when you meet resistance and choose to stay, breathe, and see what lies on the other side.

A gentle reminder for your practice. The poses you tend to avoid are often the ones that hold the most valuable lessons for your growth. We encourage you to lean into the challenge with curiosity.

Our success on the mat is not measured in headstands or advanced postures. It is measured in our ability to try, to fall, and to get back up with grace and a sense of humor.

Yoga is not a sport. It is a holistic practice for every human, incorporating breath control (pranayama) and meditation (dhyana) to help you find true mental steadiness beyond the physical postures.

A reminder to let go of what you cannot control. This practice teaches us to stop rushing and accept that everything unfolds in its own time. Be present, be mindful, and just be here now.

Let go of the need to rush and simply trust the timing of your journey. This practice is about accepting what is, breathing into the present moment, and allowing things to unfold naturally.

There is freedom in the moments you feel lost. When you don't know what comes next, you are free to move in any direction. Your mat is the perfect place to explore this freedom.

Get to know the vision behind The Shala. In this short Q&A, I share what yoga means to me, the myth I want to bust, and my advice for anyone just starting their journey.

About Our Philosophy: More Than Just Poses

We know that starting out feels awkward—that’s exactly why we don’t expect you to walk in with perfect form or fancy gear. Whether you’re joining us for a Mysore practice or a Hatha session in our Greater Kailash studio, my goal is that you leave feeling grounded, not just physically tired. You don’t need to be 'ready' to start; you just need to show up.

At The Shala, I teach from a place of lived experience, not from a textbook. When I began this journey, I had no idea how it would turn out, and I built this space to hold that same messy, beautiful reality for you.

Our Ashtanga Lineage

My practice is deeply rooted in the traditional Ashtanga methods taught by my Guru, Shri Sharath Jois. This isn't about rushing to the next posture. It is about discipline, breath, and respecting the rhythm of your own body. Because I teach in small groups (usually under 15 people), you get the individual attention needed to grow safely, whether we are doing hands-on adjustments in Mysore style or verbal cues during a Led class.

Beyond the Mat

I often hear people say they aren't 'flexible enough' for yoga. That is a myth I love to bust. You don't come here because you are already perfect; you come here to work through the resistance. Some days, the practice brings up emotions or frustration—and that is where the real work happens. We lean into that discomfort together.

We have created a sanctuary with marble floors and air conditioning where you can truly switch off. Our community is built on genuine connection, not just performing poses for social media. If you are new, start with our one-week intro course. It is designed to get you comfortable with the basics without the pressure of having to know everything on day one.

I started The Shala without having everything figured out because I believe yoga is for real, human lives. My teaching is built on the Ashtanga lineage passed down by Sharath Jois, but I’m here to help you find your own pace, breath by breath, in a space that feels like home.
