Glazing is where chemistry meets art. We are always testing new glaze combinations, from volcanic craters to smooth celadon, to see how materials react in the fire.

A close-up of a glaze test tile. This one developed a beautiful metallic, crystalline effect during firing. Testing is crucial for discovering new and exciting surfaces for my work.

This glaze test shows a thick, glossy black glaze that has crawled and beaded up, creating a rich, bumpy texture. It's these happy accidents that often lead to the most interesting results.

A close-up look at a highly textured volcanic glaze on a finished pot. This effect is created by using glazes that bubble and foam in the kiln, resulting in a cratered, lava-like surface.

An extreme close-up of two different glazes interacting on a test piece. The way the brown and white glazes melt and push against each other creates a fascinating, organic pattern.

A quick look at some of my essential glazing tools. These specialized tongs and tweezers allow me to handle freshly glazed pieces without smudging the surface before they go into the kiln.

The mesmerizing patterns created by mixing different oxides and materials in a glaze bucket. This liquid texture, full of bubbles and swirls, hints at the beauty that will be permanently fused onto the clay in the fire.

About Glaze & Texture Experiments

Every kiln firing brings a new surprise because the chemistry of these glazes is alive. When we plan your piece, we do not just pick a color, we talk about the texture you want to hold in your hand, whether it is the rough, cratered surface of a volcanic glaze or something smooth and glassy.
