From Clay to Creation: The Full Journey

Pottery is a process that demands patience and rewards you with calm. From the first touch of wet clay to the final kiln firing, every step is a part of the ritual.

It all starts with hands in clay. This is where the connection begins, feeling the texture of the clay and preparing it for its new form.

If you want to cool off, try playing with some wet clay. This is me recycling clay, making sure nothing goes to waste in the studio.

I am very particular about the quality of work that leaves my studio. If a piece isn't quite right, we recycle the clay and start again. It's all part of the learning process.

Our happy, messy pottery tools after a busy day of creating. Each tool has its purpose, from shaping and cutting to adding texture.

A glimpse from our special course on developing your visual language. Here, students are learning to add texture and detail to their hand-built pieces.

Glazing is a crucial part of the ceramic process. Here you can see different techniques like color inlay and using masking fluid to create patterns.

Glazing day always starts with a bit of theory. We discuss colors, patterns, and techniques before everyone dives in to glaze their own creations.

Sometimes it takes a few tries to get it right. This is me practicing a brushstroke technique before applying it to the final piece.

A look at glazing day with my course students. Here, we are using a spray gun to apply an even coat of glaze to the pieces before they go into the kiln.

Let's talk about the kiln. This is the heart of the studio, where the final transformation happens. It's an essential part of the ceramic process.

About From Clay to Creation: The Full Journey

Most people ask how long it takes to hold their finished piece. Since I handle all the kiln firing and glazing myself to ensure every mug or bowl is food-safe and durable, there is a four-week wait from the time you finish your session until your creation is ready for pickup at my Pali Hill studio.

The journey of a piece of pottery is rarely a straight line, and that is exactly what makes it special. When you walk into The Pottery Lab, you are not just taking a class; you are starting a creative process that transforms raw earth into something functional.

The Steps of the Journey

  • Preparation and Shaping: Whether you are using the electric potter's wheel to throw a cylinder or using hand-building techniques like slab rolling and pinching, this is where you connect with the material. It is messy, it is tactile, and it is where the form begins.
  • Glazing Theory and Application: Once your piece is bone dry, we move to glazing. This is not just about color. We discuss how different oxides interact, and I guide you through techniques like color inlay, masking fluid, or spray-gun application to ensure your piece looks exactly how you envisioned.
  • The Kiln (The Heart of the Studio): This is the final and most critical stage. I use an electric kiln to fire pieces to their maturing temperature. This process is not instant; it can take a few days of firing and cooling to reach the durability needed for the piece to be waterproof and food-safe.

Why the Wait Matters

I am very particular about the quality that leaves my studio. If a piece develops a crack during the drying phase or if the glaze does not react correctly, I prefer to recycle the clay and start again rather than let a subpar item leave the premises. This is why we have a four-week turnaround time. It includes the bisque firing, the glazing, the final glaze firing, and the cooling time required to prevent thermal shock. When you finally hold your food-safe, microwave-safe creation, you know it has survived the ultimate test of fire.

Hi, I am Rekha Goyal. I have spent 26 years playing with clay, and I run The Pottery Lab in Pali Hill as a peaceful green escape from the city. I love guiding people through the messy, meditative joy of pottery and seeing them walk out with a piece they created themselves.
