Glazing and Kiln Firing Pottery Workshops
Pottery is more than just molding clay. It is about the magic that happens in the kiln, where heat and chemistry turn a simple shape into a permanent, glassy treasure.
This is the magic of pit firing. We take bisque-fired pieces and fire them in an open pit with organic materials. The smoke and flames create these incredible, one-of-a-kind patterns on the surface of the clay.
A successful bisque unloading is always a beautiful sight. These are all the student pieces, now turned into porous ceramic, ready for the next magical step: glazing.
This is what glaze looks like under a microscope. Every bubble, crackle, and crystal is a tiny universe created by heat and chemistry in the kiln. It’s a reminder of how much magic is happening on a microscopic level.

A productive day in the studio often involves glazing. Here you can see me preparing pieces for the kiln, and also helping students on the wheel. It's a slow, but deeply rewarding process.
About The Magic of Transformation
The photos here show glaze magnified under a microscope, revealing the tiny bubbles and crystals that form inside the kiln. At Mitti Space, we do not just teach you how to shape clay, we guide you through the firing process, because that is where the real chemistry happens. Whether you are curious about the organic unpredictability of pit firing or the precise science of glaze chemistry, these workshops reveal what happens after your hands leave the clay.
The Chemistry of Clay
Most beginners think the journey ends when the piece is shaped, but the true transformation happens in the fire. In our glazing and firing workshops, we pull back the curtain on this microscopic world. You will learn why glaze is not just a coat of paint, but a complex chemical reaction that fuses with the ceramic body under intense heat.
What You Will Explore
- Glaze Chemistry: Learn how to mix, apply, and troubleshoot glazes. We cover specific gravity, colorants, and firing schedules so you can move from accidental results to intentional design.
- The Pit Firing Experience: This is for those who want to get back to the roots of pottery. We use organic materials and open flames to create one of a kind patterns. It is messy, unpredictable, and entirely rewarding.
- Kiln Management: Understand the difference between bisque firing and glaze firing. You will see firsthand how we manage loading, stacking, and temperature control to ensure your pieces survive the heat.
Why Learn the Process?
Understanding the firing process changes how you build. When you know how a glaze interacts with clay at 1200 degrees, you start making different decisions about the forms you create. Our studio in Khar West provides a safe, guided space for this exploration. Whether you are joining our 3 day intensive glazing bootcamp or simply curious about the firing cycle, you will leave with a deeper appreciation for the permanent art you create.
Mitti Space
I am Kosha, and at Mitti Space, I believe in guiding you to listen to the clay rather than forcing it into a specific shape. We are a community of creators, supported by my studio cats Silky and Laila, and we love helping people find their own unique path through this beautiful, slow craft.
