Inside our Studio: A Heritage Restoration

Our workspace isn't just an office. It is a 60-year-old heritage bungalow in Chembur, restored and expanded by us to reflect our design philosophy of warmth, raw materials, and honest storytelling.

A view into our studio from the outside, framed by the original 60-year-old windows. This space is Nikita's family home, and we've taken great care to preserve its heritage, from the terrazzo floors to the intricate grill work.

The original blueprints of the bungalow that houses our studio, designed over 60 years ago. Discovering these plans was a powerful reminder of the history embedded in our workspace and our responsibility to preserve it.

The exposed brick wall of the old shed, which we decided to renovate and expand. This moment of unexpected change became an opportunity to breathe new life into a defunct space and grow our studio.

A short video tour of the entrance to our new studio extension. The terracotta jali and glass louvers create a seamless transition between the indoors and the lush green outdoors.

A detail shot of the terracotta jali facade, contrasting with the original red-painted wall of the main building. This shows how we designed the extension to complement the character of the existing heritage structure.

About Our Studio: The STaND Story

We approach our own studio exactly how we approach our clients' homes. When the old wood shed needed to be renovated after a tree fell, we did not just rebuild it. We used local terracotta brick jalis and glass louvers to blend the new extension with the existing structure, creating a space that captures natural light and airflow throughout the day.

This space acts as our living portfolio. We wanted to prove that you do not need imported materials to achieve a refined look. We focused on indigenous, locally sourced materials like Baroda Green Marble for the pantry and bathroom, which provides a deep, textured feel while remaining highly practical. The meeting room, with its central table and shelves for material samples, is designed to facilitate the same collaborative brainstorming we lead with our clients.

The building itself was designed 60 years ago by Gregson, Batley, and King. These are the same architects behind landmarks like the Reserve Bank of India and Bombay Gymkhana. Preserving this legacy while adding modern functionality was a challenge we embraced. We share our wins and woes here because we believe transparency matters. From unearthing the original blueprints to managing the extension construction, we have lived the entire design process. This is the same dedication you can expect in your own project, whether you are planning a commercial office fit-out or a home renovation.
