We peeled back the layers of a century-old South Mumbai building to reveal its bones. Discover the story of 'The Loft,' our own studio where history meets modern functionality.

The transformation of The Loft. The top images show the space as we found it, stripped back to its raw structure. The bottom images show the finished studio, with exposed brick, a new mezzanine, and an open layout that honors the building's industrial past.

The beginning of The Loft's story. This is our main studio space, where sunlight floods in through the restored arched windows, illuminating the exposed brick and concrete walls. It's a space designed to inspire creativity and collaboration.

Our design process for The Loft started with simple sketches. We focused on respecting the original character, creating flexible and multi-functional zones, and ensuring transparency throughout the space to encourage a collaborative studio culture.

More sketches illustrating the evolution of The Loft. We explored ideas for weaving spaces together, creating multi-functional areas, and bridging the gap between the lower level and the new mezzanine to create a cohesive, dynamic environment.

From process to final. This composite image shows the journey of one section of The Loft, from a raw, debris-filled room to a polished meeting area, complete with architectural sections that illustrate the spatial planning.

Before and after of the main studio wall. We stripped away the old plaster to reveal the beautiful Victorian-era brickwork. The restored arched windows now flood the workspace with natural light, completely transforming the feel of the room.

The Loft was designed for flexibility. These diagrams show how a single area can be repurposed for different functions: as a gallery for exhibitions, a hall for seminars and lectures, or a collaborative area for workshops.

The detailed layout plan for The Loft. This architectural drawing shows the careful zoning of the space, including the studio, meeting rooms, cabins, pantry, and the central 'Thinker's Corner' where our team gathers.

The lower level layout plan for The Loft. Every zone is clearly marked, from the entrance and front office to the main studio and private cabins, illustrating the logical and efficient flow of the workspace.

A sectional drawing of the entire building, showing The Loft on the second floor. This image highlights how our design inserts a modern, two-level studio within the shell of a 100-year-old heritage structure.

About Adaptive Reuse: The Story of The Loft

Adaptive reuse is a process of subtraction, not just addition. When we moved into this Victorian-era building, we peeled back decades of plaster and false ceilings to find the original brickwork hidden underneath. This approach defines how we handle all our work—we search for the existing potential of a structure and expose it, rather than covering it up with superficial finishes. If you are looking to renovate an old property, we start by understanding what the walls are already trying to say.
