Our Architectural Design Process: From Concept to Craft

We view every building as an organism and every project as an orchestra. Before we lay a single brick, we dive into the science of materials and the art of traditional craft. This is how we turn abstract ideas into built reality.

Our process is deeply hands-on. Here, we are on-site inspecting a mock-up wall of hand-cut stone, ensuring the texture, color, and jointing meet our exact specifications before full-scale construction begins. This attention to detail is what makes our work special.

Physical model making is a crucial part of our design process. It allows us to study form, proportion, and the play of light in a tangible way. Here, a member of our team meticulously crafts a detailed wooden model for a new project.

The journey of a material begins at its source. We visit quarries to select the perfect block of stone, looking for the right color, tone, and character. This raw, striated granite block is the first note in a complex architectural composition.

This video shows the hands-on process of creating our signature textured grey wash finish. It's a simple, inexpensive, and handmade technique we developed over a decade ago, combining cement and aggregate to create a wall finish with unique character.

Our design process often involves deep cultural immersion. This video captures a day in Anegundi, where we spent time with local weavers and artisans to understand age-old handicraft practices, seeking inspiration and ways to innovate with local materials.

Staircases in our projects are never just for moving between floors; they are sculptural events. This compilation showcases a variety of our staircase designs, from floating concrete treads to grand, colorful public stairs, each one a unique architectural moment.

Collaboration with skilled craftspeople is key to our work. On-site, we engage in detailed discussions with masons and contractors, working together to ensure that the design vision is executed with precision and care.

About this collection

Before we finalize any material, we build physical mock-ups to test light and texture. Whether it is selecting granite at a quarry or spending a day at a site workshop with masons, our process is obsessively hands-on. We prefer to resolve construction challenges in the studio and on-site rather than in a boardroom, ensuring every detail is fully vetted before the final build begins.

Research-Driven Architecture

We don't believe in off-the-shelf solutions. For us, every site has a unique narrative, and our process starts with deep immersion. This might mean spending days in a location like Hampi to understand the local vernacular, or visiting stone quarries to pick the exact granite block that will define a facade. We treat these raw materials as the first note in a complex architectural composition.

The Role of Physical Models

In an increasingly digital world, we maintain a strong commitment to physical model-making. These models are not just for show; they are tools for spatial investigation. By carving wood and card, we study form, proportion, and the movement of natural light in a tangible way. This allows us to see problems that a screen hides and explore solutions that a computer misses.

Empowering the Builders

Architecture is a collaborative act. We often find that the bridge between a drawing and a completed wall is a conversation with the person holding the trowel. We organize workshops to help construction workers and masons read working drawings, ensuring that the precision we design is actually achieved on the ground. When you work with us, you are not just hiring designers; you are hiring a team that takes responsibility for the entire execution, from the mock-up phase to the final site finish.

Integrating Craft and Technology

We continuously test how traditional techniques like hand-dressed stone or cement-based textured washes can coexist with modern climate-responsive strategies. This is an iterative process. We fail, we tweak the proportions, and we try again until the finish feels authentic and the space functions perfectly.

We are a team that believes architecture is a story we live, not just build. We spend our days finding the right mason, debating the texture of a wall, and blending old crafts with modern needs. For us, a good space is one where you can breathe, create, and feel at home.
