Designing Retail Spaces That Tell Your Brand Story
A retail space should be more than a display area. It is the physical manifestation of your brand identity, designed to guide your customers through a journey.
For ORRA diamond jewellery, we created a mysterious, dark interior to make the diamonds truly sparkle. The all-black store with focused, dramatic lighting and sleek glass display cases generates a rich, textured silence where the product becomes the undeniable hero.
We transformed a typical bungalow in Bengaluru into a distinctive retail store for Yamini, a home furnishing brand. By adding a modern, curved glass facade, we opened up the building to the street, creating an inviting and contemporary identity for the brand.
This video showcases our retail designs for Yamini Home. We used the brand's colorful textiles as architectural elements, hanging them from ceilings and using them to create vibrant displays that reflect their focus on natural weaves and traditional crafts.
Our design for the Forest of Chintz retail space won the Gold award at the Wade India Excellence Awards. The project was recognized for its innovative use of a monolithic, stepwell-inspired form to create a truly unique and immersive architectural experience.
Inside the Yamini store, we contrasted raw concrete walls with warm wood and the brand's vibrant textiles. A simple, robust staircase connects the floors, while built-in shelving provides a clean, organized backdrop for the colorful home furnishing products.
To create a strong brand identity for ORRA amidst a chaotic streetscape, we designed a silent, all-black glass facade. This minimalist approach stands in direct contrast to the surrounding environment, creating a sense of mystery and luxury that draws customers in.
This physical model shows our early concept for the ORRA store, featuring a dramatic staircase suspended by thin cables. We have always used physical models to explore spatial ideas and materiality long before the digital age.
About this collection
We do not just design shops; we orchestrate experiences. For every retail project, whether it is the dark, dramatic interiors of a luxury jewellery store or the adaptive reuse of a heritage bungalow for a home furnishing brand, we start by mapping out the narrative behind your brand. Every material choice, from seamless Terrazzo flooring to custom brass lighting, is decided to ensure your product remains the hero of the space, creating a setting where customers feel connected to your story.
Our Approach to Retail Architecture
Retail design is a dialogue between the brand and the street. We believe in creating spaces that stand out, not through noise, but through a clear, intentional identity. Our process is rooted in three decades of practice, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary retail requirements.
Narrative-Driven Design
When we worked on the ORRA diamond jewellery stores, we wanted to capture the mystery of a diamond emerging from coal. By creating a 'silent', all-black interior with focused, dramatic lighting, we allowed the product to glow against the dark backdrop. It was an exercise in restraint, removing visual clutter to heighten the customer experience.
Adaptive Reuse for Retail
Retail spaces often need to fit into existing contexts. In our transformation of a bungalow for Yamini into a home furnishing store, we focused on adaptive reuse. We opened up the facade with a curved glass element, allowing the brand to spill out towards the street, and used the building’s existing structure to create a domestic, comfortable environment that showcased natural weaves and traditional crafts. This approach respects the building's history while serving the functional needs of a modern store.
Why Details Matter
Great retail architecture is the sum of small, precise decisions:
- Lighting: We use high-CRI lighting to render colors accurately, ensuring your textiles or jewellery look as intended.
- Materiality: From raw concrete to hand-plastered finishes, we choose materials that provide a tactile, rich backdrop for your products.
- Spatial Flow: We design layouts that manage customer traffic naturally, moving people from browsing zones to consultation areas without forced transitions.
Whether you are looking to launch a high-street flagship or convert an industrial shed into a creative studio, our design process ensures the space works as hard as your business.
