The Guru-Shishya Parampara in Kathak
My dance is a continuous conversation with the tradition passed down by my gurus, Pt. Birju Maharaj ji and Saswati Sen Didi. This collection honors the sacred bond of the guru-shishya parampara that shapes every movement and expression in my Kathak journey.
A precious, heartfelt moment with my guru, Saswati didi. Her guidance is my light, and wearing her saree for this occasion was a dream come true. I am forever grateful for her love and wisdom.
Seeking blessings from my guru, Saswati didi, during a Guru Purnima ceremony, with a portrait of Maharaj ji in the background. My gurus have given my life purpose, and for that, I am eternally indebted.
Guru Kripa. This is a small snippet from our Guru Purnima pooja, where we presented a Paran in Taal Ashtamangal taught to us by Saswati didi. Her presence and blessings fill our dance with grace.
Namaskar. In this video, I am personally inviting art lovers to 'Ramasmaran', a Kathak production I choreographed. This work is my humble offering and an expression of love and surrender, made possible by the faith of my collaborators.
About The Guru-Shishya Parampara
When you learn from me or collaborate on a production, you are not just acquiring steps. We focus on the Lucknow Gharana technique, from perfecting the mathematical precision of a Teentaal or Dhamar to internalizing the stillness required for Abhinaya. Whether we are in my studio in Andheri or connecting online, the priority remains the same: transmitting the essence of this art form with the integrity taught by my gurus.
The guru-shishya parampara is more than a teaching method; it is a spiritual lineage. My approach to choreography and instruction is rooted in the time I spent at Kalashram. This means that regardless of whether we are working on a competition piece or a simple workshop, the foundation is always the Lucknow Gharana style.
Why Tradition Matters
In this style, technical precision—such as the clarity of footwork in a Paran or the accuracy of a Tihai—must coexist with deep emotional storytelling. Many dancers focus on the speed of the footwork, but true mastery involves the grace and silence between the beats. I teach students to respect the history of the dance, understanding the 'why' behind every gesture.
Practical Learning and Collaboration
- For Students: My online and in-person classes are designed to build a solid foundation. We start with the basics of posture and breath before moving into complex rhythmic cycles. You will receive video feedback and structured lesson plans to ensure your practice at home is effective.
- For Collaborators: If you are looking for choreography for a project, my process begins with understanding your vision. I tailor the storytelling to the music and the theme, ensuring the final piece feels cohesive and authentic. Whether you are in Delhi or Mumbai, I work to bridge the gap between technical skill and artistic expression, making the tradition accessible for modern performances.
Garvita Sharma
I am Garvita, and for me, Kathak is not a performance but a form of prayer. My artistic identity is entirely rooted in the guidance of Pt. Birju Maharaj ji and Saswati Didi at Kalashram. Every rhythm I recite and every story I tell through dance is an extension of what I have received from them.
