Kathak Dance Performances and Thematic Choreography
Kathak is my meditation in motion. Whether you are looking for an intimate solo recital or a grand theatrical production, I bring the precision, rhythm, and storytelling of this North Indian classical form to your stage.
The stage is a sacred space for me, a sanctum where I connect with the divine presence of the audience. In this moment of performance, the artist and the audience become one, lost in the shared experience of 'Rasa'.
After a two year hiatus, returning to the stage with Kathak felt like a homecoming. It was a powerful reminder that as artists, we must care for our bodies and minds, for a healthy body is essential for a long and fulfilling career in the arts.
This performance, 'Taal Swaroop', was an exploration beyond just rhythm. It was a deep dive into the character and identity of four chosen taals, unfolding their unique qualities and features through the language of Kathak.
A performance from the archives, set to the beautiful Rudrashtakam Stotram. There are times when the mind wants to dance, but the body needs rest. This clip is a reminder that health is the foundation of all artistic pursuits.
This piece, choreographed to a beautiful Krishna bhajan, is one of my personal favorites. Even with a mobile recording, the joy of expressing devotion through dance shines through. It was a spontaneous creation that remains close to my heart.
A composition by my Guruji, Pt. Rajendra Gangani, inspired by the odd-even traffic rule in Delhi. This piece playfully explores rhythm through numbers, showing how Kathak can find inspiration in the most unexpected places.
An excerpt from my performance 'Taal Swaroop' for the Santati initiative. This piece explored the essence of Dhamaar taal, where the presiding deity is Brahma, connecting the rhythmic cycles of Kathak to their Vedic roots.
I was fortunate to offer my service to the Santati initiative by my Guruji, Pt. Rajendra Gangani, with this specially created piece, 'Taal Swaroop'. It is a blessing to be part of a legacy that is passed down from Guru to shishya.
A throwback to my more active days on the Kathak stage. The body might remember the movements, but regaining the stamina and precision is a journey in itself. This clip is from an intimate performance with live tabla by Kedarnath Havaldar.
"When a dancer performs, melody transforms into a carriage, expressions turn into fuel and spirit experiences a journey." This quote perfectly captures the feeling of being lost in the rhythm of Kathak. From the archives.
About Kathak: Rhythms of the Soul
My Kathak work is strictly grounded in the Jaipur Gharana, known for its intricate footwork and technical speed. When you book a solo performance, please note that it requires a clean, non-slippery wooden stage and specific sound support for live tabla accompaniment, as the clarity of the taals is the heart of the show.
I view Kathak not merely as a performance but as a medium to share Rasa—the emotional essence that connects the dancer, the rhythm, and the audience. My practice focuses on the Jaipur Gharana, where the emphasis on footwork, technical prowess, and expansive stage presence defines the experience.
My Approach to Performance
-
Solo Recitals: These are intimate, focused sessions lasting 60-90 minutes. I prefer live orchestral accompaniment (Tabla, Flute, and Vocal support) to maintain the improvisational spirit essential to Kathak. This setup is ideal for cultural gatherings or private events where audience engagement is key.
-
Thematic Productions: For larger venues, I curate full-scale dance-dramas. Projects like 18 Days or Kathaastra utilize projection mapping and light design to bridge the gap between ancient Puranic narratives and modern theatrical expectations. These productions can involve a troupe of 6 to 30 artists depending on the scale of your stage.
-
Choreography: I compose original movements based on classical texts, ensuring every tukda (rhythmic pattern) and abhinaya (expressive gesture) serves the narrative. Whether you need a thematic piece for a corporate event or a traditional performance for a wedding, the choreography is customized to match the event's atmosphere.
Logistics and Preparation
Authentic Kathak requires specific technical conditions. For live performances, I require a sound check prior to the event to balance the orchestra, as the subtleties of the musical composition are as important as the dance itself. If you are hosting a large-scale production, we will need to coordinate light and projection cues in advance. My team manages the costume and prop logistics, ensuring the visual aesthetics align with the heritage of the story we are telling.
