An intimate journey into the depths of Kathak. From intricate footwork and high-energy chakkars to the subtle art of abhinaya, these solo recitals are a direct conversation between me, my live musicians, and you.

Performing at the Natarani Amphitheatre is always special. This is a solo piece where I am executing a long sequence of chakkars, a physically demanding yet exhilarating part of Kathak.

This clip is from the Abhiratna 2025 awards, where I had the honor of performing a solo piece. You can see my live orchestra on stage, whose music is the backbone of my dance.

I believe in keeping traditions alive. This is a very old and difficult paran aamad in 13 matras that I was privileged to learn. Performing such beautiful and complex traditional bandishes is a way of paying homage to my Gurus.

A moment from my solo performance at the Abhiratna Awards. The stage gives me the space to fully immerse myself in the rhythm and melody provided by the talented live musicians.

This is a solo performance set to Taal Dhamaar, a 14-beat rhythmic cycle. The challenge and beauty of Kathak lie in mastering these different taals, each with its unique character.

A solo piece performed in front of a beautiful Nataraja statue. The bols, or rhythmic syllables, you hear are what guide my footwork in this intricate technical sequence.

The chakkars, or spins, are a hallmark of Kathak. This clip captures a moment of high energy during my solo performance at the Abhiratna 2025 awards ceremony.

A throwback to my youth festival days. These competitions were a crucial part of my journey, teaching me discipline and the nuances of stage performance from a young age.

This solo piece is set to Basant taal, a rhythmic cycle of 9 matras. The live musicians and I are in constant dialogue, creating a unique experience for the audience every time.

I composed this tatkaar, or footwork sequence, in Basant taal during a train journey. Inspiration can strike anywhere, and it's a joy to bring those spontaneous ideas to the stage.

About Solo Kathak Recitals

When you book a solo recital, you are bringing a full musical conversation to your stage. Unlike a set performance, my solo recitals feature a live orchestra, allowing for spontaneous sawal-jawab between my footwork and the tabla player. This live element means we need a sound check of at least 60-90 minutes before your event to ensure the microphones capture the subtle nuances of both the ghungroos and the instruments.

Kathak is often misunderstood as just fast spins, but a solo recital is an intimate dialogue. It is where I explore the complete range of this art form—the technical brilliance of Nritta through complex tatkaar and chakkars, and the emotional depth of Abhinaya.

Most of my solo recitals are performed with a 4-5 piece live ensemble, including tabla, vocals, harmonium, and a melodic instrument like the sitar or sarangi. This collaboration is the lifeblood of the performance. We do not just follow a script; we improvise. The sawal-jawab—the rhythmic question-and-answer between my footwork and the tabla—creates energy that cannot be replicated with recorded tracks.

Technical Requirements

To deliver an authentic experience, please ensure the venue has wooden flooring, which is essential for the acoustics of my ghungroos. For sound, a high-quality PA system is non-negotiable. I require specific miking for both the percussive footwork and the Indian instruments. If you are hosting a cultural festival or a private intimate gathering, this setup is vital for the audience to fully appreciate the soundscape.

My Approach

My repertoire ranges from traditional Ganesh Vandana and Saraswati Vandana to experimental pieces set to Thumri or Ghazal. Whether I am performing a traditional piece in 13 matras or exploring contemporary themes, my goal is to connect with the audience, not just present a routine. If you have a specific theme for your event, let me know, and we can curate a performance that fits the mood, be it meditative or high-energy.

I am Pooja Pant, and for me, Kathak is a lifelong practice that I carry from my Guru, Smt Rajashree Shirke. I love the unpredictability of a live performance—that magic moment when the tabla player and I decide to improvise a new rhythm on the spot. It is deeply personal, and I always look forward to sharing this energy with a live audience.
