18 Days: The Dusk of an Era – Mahabharat Dance-Drama Production
A grand theatrical ballet bringing the Kurukshetra war to life. We blend traditional dance and music with modern multimedia to narrate the profound lessons of Dharma.
A pivotal moment between Krishna and Arjuna from '18 Days'. This scene captures the essence of their bond, a relationship built on guidance, faith, and the profound wisdom that Krishna imparts to a conflicted Arjuna on the battlefield.
This powerful dialogue between Krishna and Karna explores the true meaning of charity and righteousness. Through our performance, we delve into the complexities of Karna's character, whose life was a tragic tapestry of nobility and flawed choices.
The music of '18 Days' is crafted to evoke the deep emotions of the epic. Here, I discuss with Vivek Agnihotri ji how we used a complex 9.5 beat cycle and the unsettling notes of chromatic swaras to represent Shakuni's crookedness, contrasting it with the dharmic melody of Krishna.
The bond between Krishna and Arjuna is the spiritual core of the Mahabharata. In this scene from '18 Days', we portray the deep friendship and divine guidance that defined their relationship, a central theme of our production.
Portraying the cunning and manipulative Shakuni in '18 Days'. The character's physicality, with his limp and twisted expressions, is a theatrical device we use to represent the adharma he embodies, contrasting sharply with Krishna's straightforward grace.
It was an honor to hear veteran actor and director Prakash Belawadi sir's thoughts on '18 Days'. He highlighted our commitment to preserving the core 'Dharma' of the story while using modern technology, calling it a production that takes our tradition into the future.
Receiving praise from Aamir Khan for '18 Days' was a deeply validating experience. He described being in a trance while watching, and his appreciation for the dancing and storytelling from our entire team meant the world to us.
A cherished memory from our '18 Days' performance, capturing a moment of shared joy and accomplishment with the entire cast and our esteemed guest, filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri. It is moments like these that make the years of hard work worthwhile.
The energy of a live audience is unparalleled. Here, celebrated actor Upendra Rao shares his heartfelt, spontaneous reaction to '18 Days', expressing how the performance transported him. We are grateful for such genuine appreciation.
We were deeply moved by the words of Tejasvi Surya, who spoke about the production's technical expertise, grandeur, and its powerful message of Dharma. It is an honor to know our work resonates so strongly with leaders and thinkers of our generation.
About 18 Days: The Dusk of an Era
We approach the Mahabharat not just as a story, but as a technical and philosophical challenge. When depicting complex characters like Shakuni, we deliberately avoid generic movements, choosing instead to use unsettling rhythms in 9.5 beats and chromatic musical notes to represent adharma. It is about creating a physical language for virtue and vice that resonates with the audience without needing words.
The Philosophy of 18 Days
At the heart of 18 Days: The Dusk of an Era lies the question: how do we make the Kurukshetra war relevant today? It is not about simply retelling history, but about exploring the nuances of Dharma. Whether we are in a theater in Mumbai or an auditorium in Bangalore, our goal remains the same: to evoke that specific Rasa or emotional bliss that leaves the audience contemplating their own choices.
Innovation in Tradition
We believe tradition is not static. Our production utilizes modern multimedia and projection mapping to create a 3D-like experience on stage, ensuring the grand scale of an epic like Mahabharat is felt by every viewer. We faced a significant creative hurdle: how to depict the immense scale of Ghatotkacha without relying solely on VFX? We solved this through innovative stagecraft, using children of a smaller stature alongside adult performers to create a visual disparity that feels cinematic in a live setting.
A Collaborative Vision
This production is the result of decades of dedication by our family, the Prabhath Academy. It combines the rigorous training of the Jaipur Gharana Kathak with classical Karnatic music. We are grateful to have had thinkers and artists like Vivek Agnihotri and Prakash Belawadi recognize our efforts to preserve these ancient forms. If you are looking to bring a story of legacy, technical brilliance, and spiritual depth to your stage, we invite you to connect.
