Professional Tabla Accompaniment and Jugalbandi
From the quiet intimacy of a chamber baithak to the energy of a festival stage, my journey with the tabla is a constant conversation with the music. Here is a look at some of the rhythms and collaborations that define my work.
For me, tabla is the music of the soul expressed through the fingers. This is a moment of joy in my element, surrounded by the instruments that are my life's passion.
A glimpse from the Ekatvam Holi Music Festival, performing a Hindustani-Carnatic jugalbandi with the talented Mysore Brothers. The energy of a live violin and tabla duet is something truly special.
It was an absolute honor to share the stage with the legendary Padmashree Vidushi Aruna Sairam amma. Accompanying such a brilliant artist is a profound experience that I cherish.
On stage at the Dhwani Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur Music Festival, accompanying the great Pandit Jayateerth Mevundi sir. Providing tabla accompaniment for a master vocalist in a prestigious auditorium is a responsibility I take to heart.
Performing a soulful Kannada bhavageete, a form of light classical music, in an intimate baithak setting. These close-knit concerts allow for a beautiful connection with the audience and fellow artists.
A full house at our 'Bhaava Sangama' chamber concert. The magic of a baithak is the shared experience, where the audience is as much a part of the performance as the artists.
In a moment of deep focus during a performance. My goal is always to listen intently and respond to the main artist, creating a seamless rhythmic conversation on stage.
About Featured
When you book me for an event, the first thing I focus on is the conversation between instruments. I don't just show up to play; I spend the setup time ensuring my tabla is perfectly tuned to the lead artist's specific scale, so the rhythm feels like a natural extension of the melody rather than an add-on.
My approach to the tabla is rooted in the Faroukhabad Gharana, taught to me by my father and guru, Pandit Rajgopal Kallurkar. Whether I am supporting a khayal vocalist in a large auditorium or providing subtle rhythms for a bhavageete evening in a private home, my role remains the same: to listen first and respond with sensitivity.
My Performance Approach
- Adaptable Accompaniment: I tailor my playing weight and volume to the venue. In 'unplugged' baithak settings, I use hand weight to control volume dynamically, ensuring we maintain an intimate atmosphere without needing heavy amplification.
- Technical Precision: As an All India Radio 'B High' grade artist, I adhere to strict tonal standards. I carry multiple tabla sets to ensure I can match the pitch requirements of any vocalist or instrumentalist I am supporting.
- Collaborative Spirit: I believe a performance is a shared energy. My experience ranges from complex jugalbandi sessions where I engage in call-and-response (Sawal-Jawab) with violinists or flutists, to providing steady rhythmic support for devotional music programs.
What to Expect
I arrive 60 minutes before the event for a thorough sound check. For me, the magic happens in the live exchange, not just the practice. I treat every performance as a fresh collaboration, ensuring that the rhythm supports the lead artist without ever trying to steal the spotlight. If you are planning a concert, fusion event, or an intimate baithak, I am happy to discuss how we can structure the performance to fit your specific vision.
