Soulful rhythm for light music and devotional evenings, from intimate home baithaks to festival stages.

A heartwarming Kannada bhavageete about the memories a newlywed girl carries from her home. Accompanying such narrative and emotional songs requires a delicate touch on the tabla.

Moments from our houseful 'Bhaava Sangama' show, dedicated to bhavageete. You can see me here providing the rhythmic pulse for the vocalist in this intimate chamber concert.

The audience completely absorbed during our bhavageete concert. For me, "badukonthara bhavageete" which means life itself is like a light song.

A candid shot from the 'Bhaava Sangama' concert, sharing a smile with the other artists. The camaraderie on stage is just as important as the music itself.

The official flyer for my Bhakti Sangeeta performance at the prestigious Mysore Dasara festival. It was an honor to be selected to perform at this grand state celebration.

This flyer announces a special Dasavani concert, a form of devotional music. I enjoy the spiritual depth and rhythmic variety of these compositions.

About Bhavageete & Devotional Music

When I play for Bhavageete or devotional sessions, my role is to support the lyricist rather than stand out. These performances require a delicate touch, ensuring the tabla adds depth without overpowering the vocalist. I focus on unplugged dynamics, adjusting my hand weight to match the intimacy of a baithak or a small prayer gathering, so the words, and the emotion behind them, take center stage.

In the world of light music and bhakti sangeeta, the rhythm acts like a heartbeat beneath the song. Whether it is a profound Abhang, a Dasavani composition, or a contemporary Bhavageete, I believe the tabla should breathe with the singer. My approach comes from years of learning the nuances of accompaniment. In intimate settings like chamber concerts or home baithaks, we often work without high-volume amplification. Here, the technique changes entirely. I rely on the acoustic properties of the drum, controlling volume through precise hand weight and balance. It is about creating a dialogue between the percussion and the melody. I am fortunate to have performed at significant platforms, including the Mysore Dasara festival, and I treasure the energy of the Bhaava Sangama concerts. For me, music is a way to share the feeling that badukonthara bhavageete (life itself is like a song). If you are planning an event, whether it is an intimate pooja, a devotional evening, or a formal concert series, I am happy to bring that rhythmic conversation to your stage.

I am Roopak, and for me, the tabla is more than an instrument, it is a way of speaking without words. Growing up with my appa and guru, Pandit Rajgopal Kallurkar, I learned that rhythm is about listening first, then responding. I truly enjoy the subtle, emotional landscapes of Bhavageete and devotional music, where every beat supports the story the singer is telling.
