I enjoy the creative energy of jugalbandi, where different musical traditions meet. Whether it is a Hindustani-Carnatic fusion or an instrumental duet, I love creating a rhythmic dialogue that bridges musical worlds.

A captivating Hindustani-Carnatic violin jugalbandi with the Mysore Brothers, where my tabla converses with the mridangam. This fusion of North and South Indian rhythms is always a highlight.

Sharing a moment with the legendary Carnatic vocalist Padmashree Vidushi Aruna Sairam amma after our concert. Performing with artists who bridge different musical worlds is inspiring.

A rehearsal and announcement for a jugalbandi concert featuring two flutes, mridangam, and my tabla. This clip shows the collaborative process of blending different instrumental voices.

A jugalbandi concert where we presented a Kannada bandish in Raag Madmaad Sarang. This performance explores the fusion of Hindustani raga structures with regional language and flavor.

A beautiful instrumental trio session in Mysore with violin, flute, and tabla. This kind of informal jam session is where new creative ideas often take root.

An experimental fusion piece I worked on with friends, blending film music with classical instruments like tabla and a modern drum kit. This shows my interest in exploring diverse musical landscapes.

About Jugalbandi & Fusion Collaborations

When booking a fusion or jugalbandi session, I include a dedicated 3-hour rehearsal day. This ensures we align on complex time signatures, the sawal-jawab (call and response) sections, and technical sound balancing, so our performance flows naturally on stage without any technical hitches.

Jugalbandi is, at its heart, a musical conversation. Whether I am performing alongside a mridangam, flute, violin, or sitar, my goal is to weave our distinct rhythmic structures into one cohesive piece. Having performed at prestigious venues like the Gayana Samaja and collaborated with artists such as the Mysore Brothers, I have developed the ability to adapt quickly to different musical styles and impromptu improvisations.

My Technical Approach

  • Multi-Mic Setup: For fusion and collaborative projects, I prefer a configuration using dedicated microphones for both the Dayan (treble) and Bayan (bass). This ensures the clarity and depth of the tabla reach the audience, especially in larger auditoriums.
  • Rhythmic Fusion: I specialize in blending Hindustani Thekas with Carnatic mathematical structures. This requires not just technical skill, but the ability to listen and respond in real-time to the main artist.
  • Versatility: My performance style adapts to the setting, from intimate, unplugged baithaks to large-scale music festivals like the Mysore Dasara. I adjust my hand weight and volume control to match the acoustics of the venue and the needs of the ensemble.

If you are planning a fusion project or a collaborative concert and need tabla accompaniment that respects the tradition while embracing innovation, I am happy to discuss how we can integrate the instrument into your specific ensemble.

I’m Roopak. Growing up with music as my mother tongue, I see the tabla not just as an instrument, but as a way to connect with other artists. Whether we are playing a traditional raga or an experimental fusion piece, I am always ready to listen, respond, and build something meaningful with my fellow musicians.
