A Green Pottery Studio in Pali Hill
Tucked away in the quiet lanes of Pali Hill, my studio is a calm, green escape from Mumbai's city noise. Come, find your rhythm with clay.
Just another beautiful day at the studio. The green surroundings and natural light make it a wonderful place to work with clay.
The little moments in the studio are often the most musical. The breeze through the curtains, the view of the bamboo, and a freshly thrown pot on the wheel.
A look at our hand-building a teacup workshop. The studio is filled with natural light, and you can see the beautiful finished cups lined up at the end.
Glimpses of the studio, with shelves of student work waiting to be fired and the green garden just outside the door.
I set up this community studio to make art accessible to everyone. It's a space where I hope people feel mindful, sensitive, and aware.
About Our Studio: A Green Escape
People often tell me the shift from the busy Pali Hill streets to the quiet inside the studio is the best part of their day. We keep the space open, light-filled, and surrounded by plants, so you can actually hear yourself think while you work on the wheel. It is designed to help you leave the city's chaos outside for a few hours and just focus on the tactile joy of clay.
When I set up The Pottery Lab in 2015, my intention was to create more than just a classroom. I wanted to build a community space in the heart of Mumbai where art is accessible to everyone, regardless of their experience level. Whether you are coming in to try our beginner wheel throwing sessions or joining a multi-week course, the environment matters as much as the craft.
Our studio in Pali Hill is intentionally designed to be a slow, green oasis. We work with high-quality stoneware clay, and our process covers everything from the initial centering on the wheel to the final firing in our on-site kiln. You will see shelves of work-in-progress, student pieces waiting to be glazed, and a garden just outside the door that keeps the air fresh and the mind calm.
Over the last 10 years, we have seen over 8,000 stories spun on the wheel. Many of our students arrive nervous, saying they have no artistic bone in their body, and leave grinning with their own handmade teacup or bowl. We handle all the technical side of things—the glazing, the kiln firing to make your pieces food-safe, and the studio maintenance—so you can focus entirely on the meditative rhythm of creating. It is about patience, the mess, and the immense fulfillment that comes from making something functional with your own hands.
The Pottery Lab
I am Rekha, and I have been working with clay for 26 years. I built The Pottery Lab as a space where you do not need to be an artist to start creating. My goal is simple: offer a calm corner in the city where you can get your hands messy and feel a bit lighter by the time you leave.
